  1. Essay Analysis Mrs. Belof’s ELA A10

  2. Overview Our essay analysis is focused on the theme of Challenges. At the end of our essay analysis, you will be responsible for writing a 2 page, double spaced response utilizing the ideas we explored through the variety of essays to the following questions: • What qualities help us face challenges successfully? What are the benefits of challenge? • What are some of the challenges and struggles that have shaped society? How have those challenges/struggles shaped society? This writing assignment will be grades out of 20 marks but will solely focus on your ideas; however, this is not an opportunity to throw grammar out the window. If your flaws impact your writing to a point of misunderstanding it will, of course, impact your grade.

  3. Thesis Statement • When we write any kind of essay, the first task we must address is the creation of the THESIS. • A Thesis Statement usually appears near the end of the introductory paragraph of a paper. The thesis states what the argument in the essay will be. A thesis statement is usually one sentence, but it can be multiple sentences working together. • Ex. Electric cars provide a viable alternative to gasoline-fueled cars because the benefits outweigh the costs. • Ex. The Saskatchewan Roughriders have the best fan base in the Canadian Football League.

  4. This is designed to help you IDENTIFY, CREATE, and CORRECT thesis statements so that you can use them effectively in your own essays. Part 1 - The Basics 1. Explain what a thesis is in your own words. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 2. Why does an essay need to have a thesis? ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 3. Write the formula for creating a thesis on the lines below. ____________ + __________________________ = A Good Thesis Statement

  5. Part 2 - Identification Take a look at the passages below. In each paragraph, identify the sentence you believe to be the thesis statement. There is new cause for concern for parents who think they are feeding their young children safe and healthy foods. A new lawsuit claims the Environmental Protection Agency is allowing unacceptably high levels of pesticides in some foods favored by children. Massachusetts joins Connecticut, New Jersey and New York in alleging everything from grapes to oranges to potatoes contains pesticide residues that are excessive for children. The EPA is being accused of not setting child safe pesticide limits as required by the Food Quality Protection Act of 1996. "These safety standards exist. They've existed since 1996. They need to be enforced. We do need to have these levels set and ideally they'll be set at 10 times the safety standards so that they will protect kids," said Massachusetts Assistant Attorney General Alice Moore.

  6. TRY THIS ONE: While California has been the state most prone to serious earthquakes in recent years, there are many other fault zones in other areas of the United States. For example, geologists and seismologists have predicted a 97 percent chance of a major earthquake in the New Madrid seismic zone of the central United States (including Arkansas, Missouri, Tennessee, and Kentucky) between now and the year 2035. While earthquakes with the power of the one that hit the greater Los Angeles area in January 1994 are fairly rare, less severe earthquakes can interrupt your normal living patterns and cause substantial injury.

  7. Part 3 – Create Add your opinion to the following topics to create your own thesis statements. 1. Topic: Pesticides used for controlling pests which can damage crops. Thesis: ___________________________________________________________ 2. Topic: Air pollution caused by fossil fuel emissions. Thesis: ___________________________________________________________ 3. Topic: Rainforest depletion caused by logging. Thesis: ___________________________________________________________

  8. Part 4 - Correct Take a look at the following thesis statements and re-write them correctly on the lines below. Remember that a complete thesis statement must have more than just a topic- it should also state the position or opinion of the author on that topic. 1. Air pollution is caused in part by fossil fuel emissions, which are given off by gasoline burning vehicles. This thesis is incorrect because: __________________________________________ A correct thesis might be: ______________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________ 2. This is a dangerous practice which should not be continued. This thesis is incorrect because: __________________________________________ A correct thesis might be: ______________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________

  9. Supporting Arguments • are the points the author makes to argue the thesis. They should always link to the thesis. Thesis: The Saskatchewan Roughriders have the best fan base in the Canadian Football League. • Example of supporting argument: The average resident of Saskatchewan owns two to three Saskatchewan Roughrider apparel items.

  10. Bias is feeling or showing a prejudice or opinion for or against someone or something. People may be biased toward or against an individual, a race, a religion, a social class, or a political party. 11. Theme is the idea, general truth, or commentary on life or people brought out through a literary work. Sometimes the theme is stated explicitly; most times the theme is implicit. • Ex. Courage, equality, love, jealousy, acceptance, achievement, hard work, etc.
