Observation/ Inference • Goals • CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.11-12.1 Write arguments to support claims in an analysis of substantive topics or texts, using valid reasoning and relevant and sufficient evidence. • CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.11-12.5Analyze how an author’s choices concerning how to structure specific parts of a text (e.g., the choice of where to begin or end a story, the choice to provide a comedic or tragic resolution) contribute to its overall structure and meaning as well as its aesthetic impact.

  2. Art with a Purpose • Just like classic authors, many artists create their pieces with a strong purpose or message in mind. • Often, works of art mirror works of literature from a specific culture or era. • As you observe the following artistic pieces, pay close attention to details that will lead you to discover the author’s message. • Use those details to make inferences about the piece.

  4. Artist’s choices • Today we will cover some basic art terms and their impact on the meaning and aesthetics of a piece of non-print media.

  5. Line • Lines can have connotation. • Straight make us think of buildings = strong and powerful • Curvy lines are associated with living things = soft, delicate, or graceful • Jagged lines suggest objects like broken glass, sawteeth, or lightning= aggressive or wild.

  6. Line • Movement: Lines can imply movement • Straight= rigid or swift • Curved= relaxed or graceful • Jagged= nervous or awkward • Direction • Vertical= strong • Horizontal=calm or stable • Diagonal= unstable

  7. Work with your table to identify the different types of lines in this piece. What effect do they have on the piece? • Torii Kiyomasu, Ichikawa Danjūrō I • in the role of TakenukiGorō.
