  2. JESUS LORD OF LEGEND? Miracles

  3. 1. Timing of mark makes it unlikely to be a legend Gospel of Mark Jesus ministry and death AD 33 AD 60 Eye witnesses still alive Paul writes in 1 Cor 1 that there were 500 witnesses of Jesus resurrection

  4. 2. tHE NATURE OF THE GOSPEL WRITING COMPARED TO CONTEMPORARY LEGENDS AND MYTHS

  5. And from heaven father Zeus himself gave confirmation to his words, and commanded that glorious Hermes should be lord over all birds of omen and grim-eyed lions, and boars with gleaming tusks, and over dogs and all flocks that the wide earth nourishes, and over all sheep; also that he only should be the appointed messenger to Hades, who, though he takes no gift, shall give him no mean prize." Homeric Hymn to Hermes IV.549f

  6. Then King Agamemnon rose, holding his sceptre. This was the work of Vulcan, who gave it to Jove the son of Saturn. Jove gave it to Mercury, slayer of Argus, guide and guardian. King Mercury gave it to Pelops, the mighty charioteer, and Pelops to Atreus, shepherd of his people. Atreus, when he died, left it to Thyestes, rich in flocks, and Thyestes in his turn left it to be borne by Agamemnon, that he might be lord of all Argos and of the isles."

  7. Just after teaching he switched boats • Again he began to teach beside the sea. And a very large crowd gathered about him, so that he got into a boat and sat in it on the sea, and the whole crowd was beside the sea on the land. 2 And he was teaching them • (Mark 4:1-2 ESV)

  8. On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.” 36 And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. And other boats were with him • (Mark 4:35-36 ESV)

  9. Incredible detail • And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. 38 But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing • (Mark 4:37-38 ESV) Experienced sailors terrifed

  10. Evidence • Detailed Eye witness details . • Legends do not have details as they don’t add anything to the story • Gospel account don’t fit into these theories about legends

  11. Mark 2000 years ago without any precedent suddenly produced modern narrative realistic fiction and then stopped till today

  12. . And they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing • (Mark 4:37-38 ESV) Experienced sailors terrifed

  13. And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm • (Mark 4:39 ESV) Be quiet and stay quiet Mega calm or Dead calm ..sea like glass Wind can stop but waves usually will continue to pound Here everything stops..incomparable power Ancient cultures –sea is ultimate symbol of uncontrollable power Only God can control the sea

  14. Antiochus Epiphanes • 2 Maccabees 9 claimed he had power to calm the waves and all the Jewish rabbis said that is blasphemy

  15. Who is this and what does this mean for us? • Jesus does not conjure or call on a higher power. He is the power ..

  16. 38.But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing • 40.He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith If you loved us you would not be letting us go through deadly peril I can love someone and still let them go through a storm

  17. Fear of jesus now instead of sto?rm • And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him • (Mark 4:41 ESV) Jesus is very powerful and unmanageable! Storm is powerful too

I adjure you by God, do not torment me.” 8 For he was saying to him, “Come out of the man, you unclean spirit • (Mark 5:6-8 ESV) • Always call on higher power..Demon calls on God • Legion – 6000 demons • He is power Himself..

  30. Nothing anywhere else like this happened in ancient literature..must be true • You cant tell Jesus what to do • All the wealth in the world is not worth one human soul • Romans were unclean pigs • Decapolis unclean area Gentile area..Jesus expected there to go there to drive them into the sea, He heals gentile man • Legions that are causing trouble are not outside but inside

  31. The “Headless One” Exorcism Ritual,

  32. “I invoke you, Headless One (ἀκέφαλος), who created earth and heaven, who created night and day, who created light and darkness. You are Osoronnōphris (Ὀσοροννωφρις), whom no one has ever seen. You are Iabas (Ἰαβας). You are Iapōs (Ἰαπως). You distinguished the just and the unjust. You made female and male. You revealed seed and fruits. You caused people to love each other and to hate each other. • “I am Moses your prophet to whom you have transmitted your mysteries celebrated by Israel. You revealed the moist and the dry and all nourishment. Hear me! • “I am the messenger of Pharaoh Osoronnophris; this is your true name which has been transmitted to the prophets of Israel. Listen to me and turn away this daimon. • “I call upon you, awesome and invisible god with an empty spirit, AROGOGOROBRAŌ SOCHOU MODORIŌ PHALARCHAŌ OOO. My name is: Heart Encircled by a Serpent (καρδία περιεζωσμένηὄφιν). Come forth and follow!” • Preparation for the foregoing ritual: Write the name-formula on a new sheet of papyrus, and after extending it from one of your temples to the other, read the six names, while you face north, saying: • “Subject to me all daimons, so that every daimon, whether heavenly or aerial or earthly or subterranean or terrestrial or aquatic, might be obedient to me and every enchantment and scourge which is from God.” And all daimons will be obedient to you

  34. Whats with the pigs? Proof of removal of spirits The demons down die just the pigs In the eyes of Jesus, the rescue and restoration of one person is more important than vast capital assets

  35. Jesus expects everyone to testify • As he was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed with demons begged him that he might be with him. 19 And he did not permit him but said to him, “Go home to your friends and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.” 20 And he went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him, and everyone marveled • (Mark 5:18-20 ESV)

  36. The herdsmen fled and told it in the city and in the country. And people came to see what it was that had happened. 15 And they came to Jesus and saw the demon- possessed man, the one who had had the legion, sitting there, clothed and in his right mind, and they were afraid • (Mark 5:14-15 ESV)
