University Counselling Service & ISSU An opportunity to • Gain greater self-awareness • Learn to cope more efficiently with the problem at hand • Discuss any study, social or personal issues causing concern • Explore options with professional staff • Free and confidential individual counselling

  6. University Counselling Service & ISSU Counselling is: • Free • Confidential • Non-judgmental • Helpful

  7. UCS and ISSU Academic Problems • Lack of motivation • Exam anxiety • Doubts about course choice or continuation • Special Consideration • Organisation; time management • Liaison with academic staff

  8. Anxieties Depression Self-esteem Substance abuse Eating disorders Pressures of university life Transition to Uni Suicidal thoughts/feelings Sexual identity Grief/bereavement issues Traumatic experiences Physical or sexual abuse UCS and ISSU

  9. UCS and ISSU • Relationship difficulties • Divorce issues • Feelings of social isolation • Family problems • Lack of friends • Lack of social skills • Harassment

International Student Support Unit • Specifically for international students • Available to students and accompanying family members • ISSU Counsellors provide a range of support services including individual counselling • ISSU Counsellors have expertise in cross-cultural issues • ISSU Counsellors have experience in working with students from a wide range of cultural and language backgrounds

  11. Disability Services • Support for students with disabilities • Medical, physical, psychiatric, learning disabilities, hearing, vision • Staff work with administration and academic departments to meet student needs • Students register to receive services

  12. Disability Services • Services after registration can include: • Peer Note-taking Services • Library assistance) • Access to assistive technology • Resting rooms • Adjustment to exam procedures

  13. Accommodation Service • Assists students to find off-campus accommodation • Maintains an extensive database of properties • Students access database by using SID • Office open between 10.00-4.00pm daily

  14. Casual Employment Service • Assists degree students to find work to support their continuing study • Includes degree-related work eg • accounts,computing,education, legal, social work, tutoring • some on campus jobs • Hospitality,retail, office work, child care etc

  15. Casual Employment Service • Job listings accessed via MyUni, current SID and registration required • Drop-in CV and cover letter checking service • Information and referrals in case of difficulties

  16. Child Care Information Officer • For students and staff of the University who are parents • Information about : • Long Day Care Centres • Occasional Day Care Centres, Before and After School Care, Vacation Care, Family Day Care, Schools, Evening Care

  17. Financial Assistance Office • Loans to assist students who experience financial difficulties • For help in emergencies; to supplement other income • Available to enrolled undergraduate and postgraduate students • Loans are repayable (usually within one year)

Learning Centre Services include: • Faculty program workshops to suit specific demands of particular degree courses • Individual learning program • Central workshop program - study skills, academic reading and writing, oral communication, examination skills, postgraduate research writing skills

  21. Learning Centre What we don’t do: • Full-time intensive English language courses • Editing/proof-reading • Advice on course content

The University Health Service • A general practitioner service and emergency medical care to University community • Consultations by appointment or on a walk-in basis • Both male and female doctors • Bills Medicare and OSHC Worldcare directly for most consultations • Bring your Medicare Card or OSHC Card

  23. Careers Centre • Assists current students and recent graduates • CV checking service-within 24 hours • Workshops: Writing Successful CVs,Writing Application forms,Understanding Interviews, Assessment Centre Experience, Decision-Making • One-to one advice • Vocational Guidance Assessment
