Millions of people across the world consume rice on a daily basis. Fun fact: Rice was so important in feudal Japan, that it once was used as a form of payment to soldiers. The Daimyo (feudal lord) often made a payment to his soldiers in the form of ‘koku’, or an amount of rice enough to feed a person for a year. So join us as we take a yummy tour of world cuisine and discover some of the world’s most iconic rice dishes.

  2. 1.Biryani Biryani is to Indians and Pakistanis, what risotto is to the Italians. While its origins are still a topic of hot debate, there is no doubt that it remains a firm favourite. Long grained basmati, cooked with an assortment of spices and meats, biryani is a slow cooked delight. A staple at weddings and festivals, fans of Biryani will argue to no end as to which restaurant or region makes the best Biryani. So whether you crave a fiery Hyderabadi Biryani, a slow cooked (lazeez) Awadhi Biryani, or a Kolkata Biryani, when it comes to this dish, everyone’s a winner. 2.Paella

  3. Paella is one of the most popular rice dishes in the West. Paella made with Bomba rice, is said to have originated in the Spanish city of Valencia. It is cooked in a large flat pan with saffron, tarragon, rosemary and other spices. A wide assortment of meats, veggies and seafood are also a part of this lipsmacking dish.

  4. 3.Risotto Risotto is one of the most recognisable dishes in Italian cuisine. A dish invented in the Lombardy region, it is made by sauteeing the rice, and then slowly cooking it with a vegetable, or meat based broth. The main characteristic of risotto is its creaminess. This happens because the rice releases starch. This is why arborio, vialone nano or carnaroli rice are best for this particular treat.

  5. 4.Nasi Lemak Nasi Lemak is an iconic Malay dish. Nasi in the Malay language means rice and Lemak translates to rich. At the heart of this dish is Jasmine or other long grained rice. It is made by cooking the rice with coconut milk, water, pandan leaves and spices. This rice is traditionally served with Sambal (a hot sauce with shrimp paste), cucumbers, diced veggies, eggs, toasted peanuts and fried eggs.

  6. 5.Congee Congee is a type of porridge or gruel that is served as a morning meal or to people who are unwell. Chinese congee uses Jasmine or any other long-grain rice. It is made by boiling the rice in water or stock. It can be consumed by itself, but is often served with stir-fried veggies, tofu and other condiments. Rice is beloved around the world. In all of its forms, whether short, medium or long grained, rice is definitely one of those grains that unites us all. Check out our amazing range of rice from all around the world.
