  1. Rydberg-Ritz combination principle A Swiss physicist Walther Ritz resolved the relationship between the spectral lines of the atom in terms of their frequencies in 1908 and named it as Rydberg-Ritz combination theory. The principle states that the frequency of mysterious unknown spectral emission of an atom is nothing but the sum or difference of frequencies of its closely related known spectral emission lines. The electron route while traveling between the quantum states of the substance depends upon the amount of energy absorbed or emitted by the electron in that particular transition. The Ritz combination principle expresses these electron energy changes of a particular transition with their frequencies. Quantum theory forms the basis of the Rydberg-Ritz combination principle. By following it, the light consists of photons whose energy is proportional to the frequency or wavenumber of the emitted light radiations.. The Rydberg-Ritz combination principle states that the wavenumber of the unknown spectral lines of any chemical element can be obtained by adding or subtracting the wavenumbers of the nearby spectral lines of the same substance.
