Group Leadership - 2009-2010 • Basil Hassan, Director • Nancy Andersen and James Afarin, Deputy Directors • TC Chairs / Chair-Elects • Computer-Aided Enterprise Solutions – Mike Jahadi • Economics – Marilee Wheaton / Annalisa Weigel • History – Scott Eberhardt / Kevin Burns • Legal Aspects of Aeronautics and Astronautics – Pamela Meredith • Management – David Elrod / Andrea Amram • Multidisciplinary Design Optimization – Timothy Simpson • Society & Aerospace Technology – John Christian • Systems Engineering – John Day / Sophia Bright • Note: Technical Information TC dissolved in Jan. 2009 and combined with History TC

  5. Goals for ETM Group Each TC should conduct activities that keep the TC vibrant and provide value to their members. Each TC should provide a product or set of products (ie conferences, forums, awards, etc) that provides benefits to the members of the Institute. The focus of the group will be to develop and sustain quality TCs, not quantity. Helping TC to develop Young Professionals as our future leaders Working with organizers of Inside Aerospace and New Horizons Forum to see if the TCs in ETM can help with organization of those events. 5

  6. Computer-Aided Enterprise Solutions TC • 3D Interoperability Conference, Denver (5/14-15/2008) • Provided Keynote Speaker • Presentations & round table discussions • Supported the Aerospace Industries Association Technical Data Package Initiative (Composition, Communication and Application). • Support of the Engineers Week & local AIAA Activities • Submitted highlights Article for Aerospace America • TC membership and activity is dropping every year • Committee given until Jan. 2010 to revitalize or consider other options, including dissolving or combining with another appropriate TC

  7. Economics TC • Provided article for the Aerospace America Highlights issue  • Space 2008 Conference, (Los Angeles, CA, Sept. 2008). Sessions/papers and Economics TC meeting. • 26th ICAS Conference, (Anchorage, AK, Sept. 2008). Sessions/papers and Economics TC meeting. • Aerospace Sciences Meeting (Orlando, FL, Jan. 2009). History TC • Number of TC meetings: 2 • Special events, invited speakers, tours, or other highlights • Support Historic Aerospace Sites Program • Working Airspace Oral History Project • Honors and awards presented • AIAA History Manuscript Award to Erik Conway, “History of the Atmospheric Sciences Program” • AIAA Gardner-Lasser History Aerospace literature award is to Kenneth Lipartito and Orville Butler, “A History of the Kennedy Space Center,” University of Florida Press, 2008 • AIAA Children’s Literature Award to Mary Kay Carson, "Exploring the Solar System" • On the bookshelf articles • Conferences supported by History TC: ASM, JPC, Space

  9. Legal Aspects of Aeronautics and Astronautics • The Legal TC conducted its annual meeting and roundtable discussion at the Cosmos Club in Washington, D.C.  Government speakers from the key agencies involved with space activities, including • General Counsel of NASA • FCC Bureau Chief in charge of regulating satellite communications • Staff Director of the House Space & Aeronautics Subcommittee • Deputy Director of the State Department office responsible for space • Legal TC roundtable remains an attractive forum for government speakers as they benefit greatly from the exchange of ideas and information with our members and other government speakers.

  10. Management TC • Three 2-Day TC Meetings (May ‘07 – April ’08) • Focused on a topical theme relevant to the challenges of managing large engineering programs and organizations • Multiple invited speakers from industry, government, and academia • Review and discussion of relevant journal articles • Tours of facilities at meeting site • Hap Arnold Award for Excellence in Aerospace Program Management: Michael Francis, Chief Operating Officer, General Atomics Photonics Division • Von Braun Award for Excellence in Space Program Management (co-sponsored with Space Systems Technical Committee): no award given in 2008 • Completed annual article in Aerospace America • Assisted in organizing AIAA Inside Aerospace ’08 Conference and Baltimore Section Young Professionals Conference

  11. Multidisciplinary Design Optimization TC • Number of TC meetings this year: 3 • AIAA Conferences Supported • 12th Multidisciplinary Analysis & Optimization (MAO) Conference, Victoria, British Columbia (September 2008) – Includes Student Paper Conference • 2009 Aerospace Sciences Meeting (ASM) and Exhibit, Orlando, FL (January 2009) • 5th Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (MDO) Specialist Conference at the 2009 SDM Conference, Palm Springs, CA (May 2009) • Honors and Awards • Dr. Karen Willcox (MIT) and Dr. Raymond Kolonay (AFRL) received the MDO TC Service Award for their significant contributions to the MDO TC. • Professor Ilan Kroo (Stanford University) was unanimously selected by the MDO Awards Sub-Committee as the recipient of the 2008 MDO Award. • Joint sessions/liaison with Aircraft Design and NDA TCs • Will Hold 2010 MAO Conference in conjunction with ATIO. • Annual Aerospace America Highlight Article

TC sized doubled to 24 members so far.

  13. Systems Engineering TC • Two meetings (one cancelled due to hurricane) and 11 telecoms during year • Organized / chaired 2 Systems Engineering sessions at ASM 2009 • Provided article for the Aerospace America Highlights issue • SETC Handbook was revised and approved by the committee • ANSI / AIAA G-043-200x - Guide for the Preparation of Operational Concept was completed. The TC is working with the AIAA SEC on publishing this guide • TC looking to develop an AIAA sponsored Journal in Systems Engineering. A special issue of Journal of Aircraft will focus on Systems Engineering in 2009. • TC members active participants in the Network-Centric and Value-Driven Design Program Committees • The SETC is co-chairing a panel and sessions with the Economics TC at the Space 2009 conference.

  14. MDO TC Request to move to AD&S Group MDO TC voted on May 6, 2009 to request a move from the Engineering and Technology Management Group to the Aerospace Design and Structures Group. Since TAC Reorganization in 2007-08, AD&S Group has a renewed focus on “Design” MDO TC (formerly a member of the SDT Group) felt that their activities would be better aligned with the AD&S Group’s new focus. The MDO TC also hold a conference in conjunction with the Group’s SDM Conference and is active with the NDA TC. Basil Hassan (ETM Director), Tim Simpson (MDO TC Chair), David Jensen (outgoing AD&S Director), and Kathleen Atkins (incoming AD&S Director) are all in agreement. 14

  15. Motion Approve the request of the MDO TC to move from the Engineering and Technology Management Group to the Aerospace Design and Structures Group. 15
