  3. The Korean Settlement • US & North Korea/China were deadlocked from 1951-53 • July 1953: Armistice signed after Ike threatened China = Korea remained divided at 38°. • Over 54,000 Americans died in Korea

  4. Joe McCarthy’s Downfall • 1953: He began attacking his own party & the army as communists • After the televised Army-McCarthy hearings, the Senate had him censured = public condemnation

  5. Blacklisting Continued • Eisenhower fired 1,500 employees as “un-American” or “security-risks.” • Included gays and drinkers • Colleges & businesses did same • Yates v. U.S (1957): Supreme Court upheld right to teach anything as long as it doesn’t advocate breaking the law.
