  1. Functions of a Greenhouse

  2. The basic function is to provide a protective environment for crop production • Temperature range conducive to plant production • Moisture range conducive to plant production • watering • Humidity • Pest Control • Insects • Diseases • Weeds • Rodents • Nutrition • in soil and water • in air – ventilation is necessary to supply carbon dioxide

  3. Cost of heat is a major expense of greenhouse plant production • Labor is usually the greatest expense • Heat is usually the second highest expense

  4. Greenhouse effect is the way greenhouses collect and store heat from the sun • Radiant energy warms the greenhouse and its contents • Greenhouses lose heat through the plastic, glass, etc. and additional heat has to be provided especially in winter

  5. 8.02-Temperature Controls • Heaters • Fans • Cooling Pads • Mechanical Air Conditioners • Ventilators • Shade Cloth • Fogging • Misting

  6. 7.02-Environmental Controls • Thermostat-should be at plant level • Aspirated-small fan blows air continuously over temperature sensing unit for more uniform temperature • Thermistor-use of computers to monitor • Air – ventilation • thermostats control sensors to open vents and operate exhaust fans • thermostats control sensors to pull air through fan and pad cooling systems • Light • Photocell-measures light intensity (turns lights on and off) • Timer-turns lights on and off at a certain time • Moisture • Humidistat-controls fogging and misting to regulate relative humidity

  7. 8.01-Maintenance Items • Temperature • Heaters-adequate clean fuel • Thermostats working properly • Fans, Fan motors, belts, etc-work • Cooling pads-adequate water and clean • Shade cloth-attached and is at right percentage • Light • Shade Cloth-attached or removed • Light bulbs-all work • Photocells & Timers-work correctly

  8. 8.01-Maintenance Items • Moisture • Humidistat & Fogging/Mist Systems-work properly • Water lines & faucets-no leaks and adequate source of high quality and clean water • Sanitation • Diseases, Weeds & Insects-controlled by prevention methods

  9. 8.02-Temperature, Light, & Moisture • Temp Controls • Heaters • Fans • Cooling pads • Mechanical air conditioners • Ventilators • Shade cloths & materials • Fogging and misting

  10. Heaters , Fans and Cooling Pads

  11. Ventilators, Shade Cloths, Foggers and Misters

  12. 8.02-Temperature, Light, & Moisture • Light Controls • Lights • Shade cloth • Shade materials • Black cloth • Moisture Controls • Watering System • Shade cloth • Foggers • Mist system • Humidifiers

  13. General Maintenance A. Inspect and make structural repairs 1. Loose, torn or cut plastic covers 2. Broken glass or fiberglass 3. Door locks and fasteners 4. Air leaks 5. Damaged framework and foundation

  14. General Maintenance cont. B. Inspect and make repairs for controls and equipment 1. Heaters 2. Fans 3. Pumps 4. Thermostats 5. Humidistats 6. Photocells 7. Timers 8. Sprayers C. Inspect and make repairs for utilities 1. Water 2. Electricity 3. Gas or fuel oil 4. Waste and trash disposal
