Enrichment Opportunities and Internships Advisory Lesson 10.02.13
Why is enrichment important? • Experiences you can put on college applications, scholarship applications and job applications • Creates connections – “its who you know” • Engagement in activities in learning environments = good for you! • New experiences, places, people!
Sample Program Application • Besides demographic and academic information, most applications have essays. Example from Chicago Conservation Leadership Corps: • What’s your story? Write freely about who you are. You can describe your home life, your interests, how you spend your free time, your goals, and/or challenges. • Have you had any job experience and\or have volunteered in community service? Can you describe your experience? How would your coworker or others describe your personality? • What do you enjoy about the outdoors? • Have you been to a Forest Preserve? If yes which one? • What made you apply for Chicago Conservation Leadership? • How would you answer these questions?
Creating a resume helps! • If you have a resume, it is very easy for you to transfer the information to any application (enrichment or college) or just upload it to the application!
Fill out the blank resume! • Fill in all of your information in each section • There is an option on Naviance which will auto-format your information for you if you enter it • Spend about 15 minutes completing your resume • Don’t have a lot to put on your resume? This is where enrichment programs and community service help!!!
Application Reminders • Be aware of due dates! • Ask teachers/counselors/mentors for letters of recommendation at least two weeks in advance • Read all directions on application • Ask counselors for transcripts and test scores at least 2 weeks in advance
