Acceleration, Speed, and Velocity Ch 2 Sect 2
Acceleration • Acceleration is the rate of change of velocity • When an objects velocity is changing then it is accelerating • Change in velocity occurs when an object changes its speed, direction or both
Types of Acceleration • There are three main types of acceleration that you will be required to know • Positive acceleration- (+) acceleration occurs when an object is speeding up • Negative acceleration- (-) acceleration occurs when an object is slowing down • Constant acceleration- Acceleration that is not changing
Calculating Acceleration • Acceleration=Change in Velocity Time • A = (vf-vi) t • vf = final Velocity • vi = initial Velocity • t = time
Motion and Acceleration • If motion is in a single direction you use speed to find acc. • (sf-si) • SI unit for velocity • m/s/s or m/s2
