  2. What is an Internship? An internship is a structured learning experience in a work setting. It is any carefully monitored work or service experience in which a student has intentional learning goals and reflects actively on what she or he is learning throughout the experience. An internship differs from a short-term job or volunteer work is that an intentional “learning agenda” is structured into the experience. Learning activities common to most internships include learning objectives, observation, reflection, evaluation and assessment.

  4. Are you ready for an Intern? • Interns take time, time to teach, train, explain, mentor and guide • Do you have the time to devote to these tasks? • Do you have a clearly defined project? • Do you have adequate resources to support an intern? Computer, phone, desk, marketing $.

  5. Timeline for Internships? Assume you would like an Intern for Fall Semester 2011. When should you undertake each of the following • Network All the Time! • Clarify Need & Role Now till July • Post Position Late July/Early August • Interview & Select Intern Mid-Late August • Provide Feedback & Guidance Frequently • Address Issues As Soon as Possible • Feedback to CSB End of Fall Semester

  6. Tips for Success Provide a clear, interesting & accurate position description. Have a clear week by week training plan & set clear expectations from the outset. Provide the intern with a supervisor who is willing/able to assist the intern. Set clear project goals & deadlines, communicate these goals verbally and in writing. Include the student in meetings, events & professional development opportunities.

  7. FAQ’s • Pay: Varies, from an hourly wage, flat rate stipend, or no pay. Pay will always attract better & more committed students. • Course Credit: It depends • CSB IF the student meets the requirements AND can benefit from credit • College of Arts & Sciences: Internship site must be approved. Requirements vary by department. • Hours: Typically 12-15 hours/week during the academic semesters. Can be full-time during Summer
