  1. Syllabus outline • Part 1: Language in cultural context • Part 2: Language and mass communication • Part 3: Literature – Texts and contexts • Part 4: Literature – Critical study

  2. Assessment outline • Paper 1: Textual analysis, commentary on unseen text(s), non-literary and literary • Paper 2: Essay , based on literature texts from part 3

  3. Written tasks: Three at SL, four at HL, based on all parts of the syllabus. One assessed at SL, two at HL. • Internal Assessment: - A formal oral commentary on a text from part 4 - An oral activity based on parts 1 & 2

  4. How the Exams are Counted • External assessment70% • Paper 1: Comparative textual analysis 25% • Paper 2:essay 25% • Written tasks 20% • Internal assessment30% • Individual oral commentary 15% • Further oral activity 15%

  5. Changes in the thinking behind the course • Consideration of the context of a text is central to the course • This means thinking about: • What the reader brings to the text • The circumstances under which the text was produced • How the text, its language and themes are viewed by society • More formal analysis of literature required
