  1. UAV Thermal calibration using a custom designed hot plate Author Michelle Gonzalez The Center for Self-Organizing and Intelligent Systems (CSOIS) Utah State University, Logan, UT, USA Phone: (801)884-9235 michelleglez20@yahoo.com Applications for SWIR InGaAs Abstract In this paper imaging process on thermal infrared cameras calibration will be discussed. An infrared thermal camera ICI 7640 P-Series camera will be used to conduct the tastings. Applications that are useful for the SWIR camera are also discussed in this paper. Different presentations of image processing and thermal calibrations are discussed in this paper as well. This is the 320x 256 Induim Gallium Arsenide focal plane array. These elements makes the camera be very sensitive to energy in the near-infrared (NIR) and shortwave infrared (SWIR) this cameras are suited for the detection of telecommunication; laser beam profiling; and optical measurement and testing and can be used for IR reflectography, imaging through paints, chemical imaging, and agriculture inspection. What is Thermal Infrared? • SWIR InGaAs Applications • -Low-light level imaging • -Covert surveillance with passive 24 hr/7 day • operation • -Emission microscopy (is an analytical technique used in materials science to investigate molecular structures and their electronic properties) • -Imaging spectroscopy (is similar to color photography, but each pixel acquires many bands of light intensity data from the spectrum, instead of just the three bands of the RGB color model) • -Astronomy ICI 7640 P-Series Infrared camera What is SWIR InGaAs? Applications for Thermal Infrared Summer water temperature is important to the endangered fishes because temperature affects the productivity of the aquatic food base, growth and survival of larval fish, and conditioning of adult fish. • Shortwave Infrared cameras work in the wavelengths from 0.9-1.7 microns. • High sensitivity • High resolution • Seeing in the light of night glow or night sky radiance (this is a plus because we are not going to fly at night) • Day-to-night imaging Test Plan image with fog and haze image without fog and haze -Compare Heat Flow and Infrared laser thermometer -Test for dynamic range -Range of temperature -Distance range -Accuracy as the camera is moving -Test for noise(blurring, etc) Future Work In conclusion an extensive research was done in order to calibrate the thermal camera using a hot plate for the UAV. Calculations were made to acquire the correct size for the hot plate. A custom design was made for the hot plate but unfortunately the project was not able to be completed due to the lack of time and the problems that we encountered with the ICI Company. If more time was provided the project would have been able to be completed due to the fact that the drivers were received at the last week of the summer. The hot plate would be able to be build and the camera would have been tested and calibrated. . NIR Near Infrared InGaAs Thermal Imager 320x256 Indium Galluim Arsenide focal plane array b. Allows the thermal imaging camera to be highly sensitive to energy in the NIR and SWIR wavebands from 0.9-1.7 microns c. The ICI NIR is suitable for IR reflectography, imaging through paints, chemical imaging, and agricultural inspection based on water detection. Current Solution Is to design a hot plate for the calibration of the thermal camera. The size was determined to be 1 ½ pixels at least in order for the UAV to be able to see it from a height of 200 meters. The size of the hot plate was determined by a spread sheet that Austin Jensen provided with all the calculations necessary. Poster based on a research paper by William Bourgeous and Michelle Gonzalez under the direction of Dr. YangQuan Chen. This research, which was supported by the NSF REU program, received an award for Best Student Paper at the ASME/MESA ’07 conference in Las Vegas, Nevada.
