International Business Program (ITB) • Two semester graduate certificate program launched 2006 • The ITB program develops the skills to investigate, analyze and manage most aspects of international trade for a firm • About 75 - 80% of the students are university graduates • Students earn dual credentials: • Ontario college certificate and • Forum for International Trade Training diploma, then • FITT International Business Professional designation

  11. Overview • Students keen for real international experiences • Canadian community colleges lag universities in internationalization, grant writing and STSA • Virtually no resources for marketing, travel etc.

  12. Models to Leverage Resources • Explore existing college resources/partners • Capitalize on existing/emerginggovernment grants • Explore creative options and partnerships • Create synergies to link interested partners

  13. 1. Explore existing college resources/partners • any existing connections with international partners or educational institutions • colleagues with passion for international, or • with experience securing funds/approval

Explore existing college resources/partners • In 2006, Fanshawe established its first short term study abroad program with Ibaraki Christian University • Each year, two students (out of 14,000 FT) win a paid four week trip to Japan by submitting the best essays • Promoting it to the International Business students and encouraging them to apply helped to send two students in the last three years

  15. Ibaraki – Fanshawe International Exchange • Promotes understanding and deepening friendship between countries, institutions and students of Fanshawe and Ibaraki • Basic Japanese classes for Fanshawe students and ESL for Ibaraki students, intercultural communication and activities

Capitalize on existing/emerging gov’t grants • In Canada, provincial and several federal departments offer attractive grants • Programs for international partnerships, internships and short-term study abroad opportunities (complex and time consuming) • Several pilot programs introduced – our College has aggressively supported and built strong relationships with government staff

Human Resources and Skills Development Canada • International Academic Mobility - Call for Proposals • Worked with International Dept. to secure $25,000 grant to explore partnerships with European educational institutions • Funded participation in two conferences: • Michigan State University (MSU) • Exceptional results from NAFSA conference • Proposed five preliminary target countries in Europe • Travel to Europe to finalize agreements (exchange/STSA) • Student internships to research/develop SME partners

The Ontario Global Edge program gives students a firsthand opportunity to learn about entrepreneurship and the role of small and medium-sized businesses in a global economy.  The Ministry of Economic Development & Trade provides grants to selected, publicly-funded postsecondary institutions – Fanshawe. University of Glamorgan Cardiff, Wales
