  1. Council of Christians and Jews WAAM I MY BROTHER’S KEEPER? … AND SISTER’S?Jewish and Christian Perspectives on Aged Care14 June 2011Revd Julie Barrett-Lennard

  2. Projected Population Increase 65+ • 14.7% in 2011 • 19.0% in 2021 • 23.0% in 2031 • 24.5% in 2036

  3. Most rapidly increasing age group of the 65+ population expected to be the 80+ year olds… 4.1% in 2011 8.1% in 2036

  4. In Australia, currently only 7% of persons 65 years and over reside in Nursing Homes.

  5. 1 Timothy 5:1-5 1 Do not speak harshly to an older man, but speak to him as to a father, to younger men as brothers, 2 to older women as mothers, to younger women as sisters--with absolute purity. 3 Honor widows who are really widows. 4 If a widow has children or grandchildren, they should first learn their religious duty to their own family and make some repayment to their parents; for this is pleasing in God's sight. 5 The real widow, left alone, has set her hope on God and continues in supplications and prayers night and day

  6. 1 Timothy 5:9-10 9 Let a widow be put on the list if she is not less than sixty years old and has been married only once; 10 she must be well attested for her good works, as one who has brought up children, shown hospitality, washed the saints' feet, helped the afflicted, and devoted herself to doing good in every way.

  7. Titus 2:2-3 Tell the older men to be temperate, serious, prudent, and sound in faith, in love, and in endurance. Likewise, tell the older women to be reverent in behavior, not to be slanderers or slaves to drink; they are to teach what is good.

  8. Ministry to and by older persons

  9. Older persons can… • pray • make phone calls • write cards and letters • Cut up/soak stamps • fold parish newsletters • teach young people to knit, sew, paint etc

  10. Like God's remembering of us, our presence to the elderly as we remember them sustains them …the reality of the communion of saints situates the elderly as equal partners in the body of Christ, without the elderly, the church is not complete.

  11. Value (sacredness) of the present moment.

  12. When our journeys cross paths, and at times connect for some period of time, the value is that the person for whom we offer care, will then be able to connect with God in that crossing or connecting.

  13. ..the social order itself, as well as the elder – ie older person – is impoverished by being deprived of the active participation of the old in the major concerns of the world.
