  6. What is the Purpose of oratory?

  7. Jonathan Edwards • 1703-1758 • Born in Connecticut • Preached to his playmates

  8. Jonathan Edwards • Graduated from Yale at 17…as valedictorian! • Earned a master’s in theology; • Began preaching career as assistant to his grandfather – the pastor of one of the largest and wealthiest Puritan congregations.

  9. Jonathan Edwards • Became pastor upon his grandfather’s death; • His sermons sparked religious zeal and conversions…often in a frenzied atmosphere; • Leader of the Great Awakening, a religious revival of the 1730s and 1740s

  10. His Downfall • Denounced people by name whom he considered sinners; • Disciplined members for reading what he considered inappropriate books; • Views and opinions were very severe.

  11. Jonathan Edwards • Dismissed as pastor; • Preached to Native Americans; • Eventually became president of the College of New Jersey (now known as Princeton University); • Wrote one of the most famous American theological works; • Preached until his death in 1758.

  12. Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God “…said to have caused listeners to rise from their seats in a state of hysteria, demonstrating Edwards’ tremendous powers of persuasion and capturing the religious fervor of the Great Awakening.”
