  2. Word Accent • Word accent is also called word stress. • It plays a critical role in communication. • English is spoken all over the world. • It has a large number of accents .

  3. Standard Pattern of Accent • The standard pattern of accent is called R.P. • What is ‘R.P.’? • ‘R.P.’ means the received pronunciation all over the world. • For learning pronunciation R.P. is recommended as a model. • Accent depends on the number of syllables in a word. • Accent also depends on the type of words, if it is used as noun or verb etc.

  4. Prominent Syllable • Words are of one syllable or more than one syllables. • One of them (syllables) is the most prominent than the other syllable or syllables. • The greater prominence may be due to the accent(stress) or due to a greater breath force.

  5. Accents in the word ‘Examination’ There are five syllables in this word -

  6. Monosyllabic and Polysyllabic words • The most prominent syllable in a word is stressed or accented. • In each word there may be prominent syllable. • The word accent in English is not fixed. • There are some rules for word stress patterns in English.

  16. Conclusion Thus, word accent or word stress means different varieties of language. The stress or accent is given on a prominent syllable in a word. Stress depends on the type of the word also. It means if the word is used in a sentence as a noun, as an adjective or as a verb.
