  1. eHRPD and LTE Interworking CDG Americas Regional Conference San Diego 11 November 2009 © 3GPP2

  2. Overview • eHRPD (evolved High Rate Packet Data) • Attaching the HRPD access network to the Evolved Packet Core (EPC) IP environment via PMIP • LTE Interworking • eHRPD – optimized and non-optimized handoff • 1x Circuit-Switched Fall Back (1xCSFB) • 1x Single Radio Voice Call Continuity (1x SRVCC) • Summary

  3. ePCF eAN eHRPD Connectivity to EPC Architecture Legend Internet EPC entity IMS Operator Appls., Etc. 3GPP2 entity HSS IP Signaling Bearer AAA PDN GW PCRF HSGW (Not all interfaces are shown in this figure.) UE

  4. 3GPP2 eHRPD Specifications • TSG-X: X.S0057 – core network • TSG-A: A.S0022 – radio access network • TSG-C: C.S0087 – air interface • TSG-C: C.S0095 – signaling and conformance tests • TSG-S: S.R0129 – requirements • TSG-S: S.R0138 – security • Revision levels are aligned to 3GPP releases • Rel-8: X.S0057-0, A.S0022-0, C.S0087-0 • Rel-9: X.S0057-A, A.S0022-A, C.S0087-A • Rel-10: X.S0057-B, A.S0022-B, C.S0087-B • Point Releases are used to support bug fixes/changes: • E.g., X.S0057-0 v1.0/v2.0/v3.0 etc. – 3GPP Rel-8

  6. LTE  eHRPD Handoff • Optimized Handoff • Involves the use of S101 and S103 to minimize the gap in packet flow to reach the goal of < 300 ms. • Signaling changes on the air interface to support S101 based tunneling. • UE establishes context on eHRPD by signaling over S101. • eNodeB (via the MME) and eAN coordinate the handoff. • Non-Optimized Handoff • The UE leaves LTE coverage, attaches to eHRPD, builds context, and resumes packet flow. • Support in LTE to direct the handoff and provide eHRPD parameters. • Latency can be several seconds.

  7. eHRPD  LTE Idle Hand-Up • LTE neighbor information is provisioned and broadcast by the eHRPD network. • Reduce searches for LTE pilots. • Minimize the device battery power consumption. • Uses reselection (idle handoff) parameters and procedures. • Similar parameters and procedures will be used for idle hand-up from 1x to LTE. • eHRPDLTE active Hand-Up has not been defined by 3GPP.

  8. LTE – 1x CSFB/SRVCC Architecture Legend Internet LTE-specific entity IMS Operator Appls., Etc. EPC entity 3GPP2 entity HLR HSS/AAA IP Signaling Bearer MGW PDN GW PCRF MSC MME SGW S102 IWS BS eNB UE

  9. LTE – 1x CSFB • LTE can be configured for Data, while Voice services are provided on cdma2000 1x. • LTE uses the S102 interface to transparently pass cdma2000® 1x signaling to and from the cdma2000 1x system. • Includes support for: • Registration • Paging for Mobile Terminated Calls • SMS cdma2000® is the trademark for the technical nomenclature for certain specifications and standards of the Organizational Partners (OPs) of 3GPP2. Geographically (and as of the date of this presentation), cdma2000® is a registered trademark of the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA-USA) in the United States.

  10. LTE – 1x SRVCC • Single Radio Voice Call Continuity anchors a voice call in IMS. • Call is transferred from the packet environment to the MSC-based circuit environment. • Control is maintained in IMS. • May reduce latency in voice call handoff from packet to circuit. • Being considered for cdma2000 1x voice call originations and terminations via S102 to reduce delays.

  11. Future Work • 3GPP2 will continue to support operators that choose to deploy LTE technologies. • 3GPP2 will continue to cooperate with 3GPP to enhance: • eHRPD – LTE interworking • LTE – 1x CSFB / SRVCC • Features made possible by LTE interworking. • Features made possible by attachment to EPC.
