  3. Standards Education Committee (SEC) • Joint Standing Committee, between • IEEE Educational Activities Board • IEEE Standards Association Board of Governors. • Results in joint Educational Activities and Standards Association activities • A positive example of staff and volunteers across two major OUs working together • Staff Liaisons • Jennifer McClain from Educational Activities • Susan Tatiner from Standards Association

  4. SEC Mission • Promote the importance of standards in meeting technical, economic, environmental, and societal challenges • Secureand disseminate learning materials on the application of standards in the design and development aspects of educational programs • Secure and provide short courses about standards needed in the design and development phases of professional practice • Actively promote the integration of standards into academic programs • Lead other education initiatives planned jointly by EAB and the SA as needed

  5. What is IEEE Standards Education? • Educating students about standards • their critical role in the workforce and society • Providing resources for students • to help with the inclusion of technical standards into their studies • Teaching the open standards development process • to provide understanding of the intersection of economics, technology, and politics that are integral to standardization • The ‘who’, ‘what’, ‘where’, ‘why’ and ‘how’ of standards • Providing resources for university professors • to facilitate the incorporation of standards topics into their courses • Continuing efforts to more widely influence the inclusion of technical standards into university curricula • Delivering technical content about specific areas of standardization

  6. Audience for Standards Education • For those in the fields of engineering, technology, and computing (ETC), business, economics, and law • College and University Educators • Undergraduate and Graduate Students • Professionals

  7. Ongoing Activities • Standards Education Grants for Students • incorporating technical standards into design projects • Education Workshops on Technical Standards and Consensus Building for students and educators • Standards Student Paper Competitions • usually regional and linked to student branches • Outreach and Speaking Events • to colleges/universities and professional conferences • Standards Education e-Magazine • apublication for those who learn, teach, use, deploy, develop and enjoy Standards • Standards Education websites

  8. Measures of Success/KPIs • Standards Education Grants • Number of grant applications, approvals, disapprovals, number of students, faculty, schools, number of completed and accepted Final Papers, visits to the websites. • Standards Education websites • Number of web hits for StandardsEducation.org; StandardsMagazine.ieee-elearning.org; StandardsPapers.ieee-elearning.org; TryStandards.org/ • Standards Education eZine • Number of web page visits, number of articles, variety of technical topics, number of issues published • SE Workshops and Speaking Events • Number of attendees, results of attendee surveys, feedback from educators and presenters, requests for future workshops and speakers

  9. Key Challenges & Opportunities • By-directional education • Bridging the worlds of standards, policy and engineering education, to ensure each recognizes the importance of the other, and providing tools to support educators talking about standards and standards and policy professionals informing the needs of education • Building critical mass • SEC supports a number of initiatives which individually have strong support and positive feedback. How can these initiatives be leveraged to provide worldwide support for everyone who wishes to access our support?

  10. 2014 Initiatives • Complete ongoing strategic planning exercises with a Business Model Canvas • Complete National Institute of Standards & Technology (NIST) grant proposal for Standards Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) • Submitted to NIST on 31 March 2014 • Complete a new initiative proposal for Standards University and submit to the NIC • Build on Education Workshops on Technical Standards and Consensus Building for students and educators

  11. 2014 Initiatives • Sponsor Panel Session at Capstone Design Conference in June 2014 • Sponsor Standards Education Learning Lab at Sections Congress in October 2014 • Participate in ITU Kaleidoscope Workshop on Standardization in June 2014 • Address educating technologists on policy • Create new standards-related videos, including: • Interview series with SA Standards Board members and Executive Director • Videos for Academic.ieee.org

  12. Motion • EAB endorses the 2014 plan for the Standards Education Committee as follows: • Perform a Business Model Canvas and complete a strategic plan for the period to 2019; • Submit an NIC proposal for an IEEE Standards University; • Submit a NIST grant proposal for a Standards MOOC; • Identify further opportunities for Standards Education Consensus-Building Workshops through 2015, sponsor panel sessionat Capstone Design Conference, participate in ITU Kaleidoscope conference, and sponsor Standards Education Learning Labs at Sections Congress; • Create new standards-related videos, including for Academic.ieee.org.

  13. Motion Continued • Pros: Increased educational activity in standards • Cons: Volunteer and ProfessionalStaff time • FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS: • None beyond existing SEC budget • IMPLEMENTATION TIMELINE: 31 December 2014
