College Entrance and Applications • Apply Early • If you need counselor recommendation, give us TWO weeks • Know the scholarship application deadlines for each school • Make sure your application is complete with transcripts, application and test scores • Know the minimum requirements • check the web sites and college handbooks • look for minimum course requirements • look for average SAT/ACT scores

AZ University Admission and Registration Process - 2 Steps • Complete Admission Application • Starting in August/September (www.asu.edu, www.nau.edu or www.arizona.edu) • Send SAT or ACT Scores and Official Transcripts for high school and community college • Application fee $50.00 • Attend Freshman Orientation to register for College Classes -ASU mid-march -U of A June -NAU mid-march

  15. What is a Credit? • 1 credit = 1 hour in class per week • 12 credits = full-time student • 6 credits = part-time • Most college classes are 3 credits

  19. COLLEGE VISITS • Many colleges visit the MdN campus. • In-state schools visit quarterly • Out-of-state schools visit throughout the year. • Students must sign-up in the counseling office or LRTC • Visits listed on calendar found on MdN Guidance website

  20. Transcripts • Helen Pina –Records in the front office sends all official transcripts. • All official transcripts must be requested by the student from Helen Pina in the front office. • Please provide an addressed, stamped envelope.

  21. Student/Athletes – NCAA Clearinghouse • Make an appointment with Mr. Miller to start the NCAA Clearing House process. • www.ncaaclearinghouse.net To participate in college athletics, students must meet NCAA eligibility requirements.

  23. Is it worth the effort? For a $1,000 Scholarship… If you spent, 10 hours of research & completing applications = $100 per hour

  24. Still not convinced? If you made $8 an hour, you would have to work 125 hours to = $1000

  29. Letters of Recommendation Best Practices • Be proactive, ask Early! • Inform them of your deadline • Send them an email at least two days before you pick up • Give them a resume, personal statement, and transcript

  30. Do’s & Don’ts of Scholarships • Do Apply, Apply, Apply often and early! • Do use multiple sources for finding scholarships • Do search locally • Do follow instructions carefully

  31. Don’t • Never pay to apply for a scholarship! • Don’t waste your money on scholarship search services that promise to help you tap into vast amount of unclaimed financial aid funds. There are many web sites that provide the same information for FREE.

  33. MERIT SCHOLARSHIPS • When applying to Arizona universities, you are automatically considered for a merit scholarship IF you have taken the SAT/ACT • APPLY early to find out results and have first priority with dorm rooms!

  34. ABOR High Honors Waiver “A’s” or “B’s” in the 16 required core classes (“C’s” can be ignored with extra classes or good AP scores in the same subject.) AND 3.5 cumulative GPA in courses used above AND Exceed AIMS in all subjects OR Exceed in 2 areas of AIMS and get “3’s” on 2 AP tests
