Our Educational System • Pre-School (Pre-kinder, kindergarten) 3-5 yrs old (Not mandatory) • Primary School (Infant 1-Standard 6) 5-12 yrs old (Mandatory until 14 yrs old) • High School (Forms 1-4) 13-16 yrs old • Junior College (2 years) Associate Degree • University (2/4 years) Bachelors Degree

  4. History of Teacher Education • Belize Teachers college (1965) – amalgamated with University of Belize in 2000. • University of Belize 2000….. • Junior Colleges 2003 (Pilot program began at SJCJC) • In 2005, three other Junior colleges SHJC, CJC, EJC began the Primary Education program

  5. St. John’s College Junior College (SJCJC) • Has graduated 15 students with 58 students presently enrolled. • Both Pre-Service and In-service students are accepted into the program • The Teacher Education Department at SJCJC consists of 4 lecturers.

  6. To Be Accepted in the Program: • High School graduates must have good academic records with CXC passes in Math and English • ATLIB exam was used to place students, but as of this year we will use the SJCJC placement exam • Interview conducted by members of the Teacher Education Department team at SJCJC

  7. Duration of the Program • 97 credits in a two year program (4 semesters and 2 summers) • Students must do a teaching Practicum I and II in the second year • Accredited by JBTE (Joint Board of Teacher Education – Mona, Jamaica)

  8. Graduation Requirements • Must pass all subjects with a C • Must pass Practicum I and II with a Ct • Must be trained in First Aid before graduation

  9. Future Programs in Belize • Early Childhood Education • Certificate Program to train High School Teachers in pedagogy

  10. Challenges in Belize • Economic cost for students • Use of Technology in training • Many students go to other countries for training
