  1. Warm – Up Paraphrasing Details & Context “Even though the wreckage had been described to her, and though she was still in pain, the sight horrified and amazed her, and there was something she noticed about it that gave her the creeps. Over everything—up through the wreckage of the city, in gutters, along the riverbanks, tangled among tiles and tin roofing, climbing on charred tree trunks—was a blanket of fresh, vivid, lush, optimistic green”(69).

  2. Part V – Dr. Sasaki’s Story • Big Question: How is Dr. Sasaki affected mentally and emotionally by the bomb? • What does Dr. Sasaki and the other Doctors remove surgically from the Hibakusha patients? What effect does this have on him? • How does Dr. Sasaki at first succeed at opening his own hospital? What is his relationship to the Hibakusha at this point in the novel? • What illness causes Dr. Sasaki to almost die, himself?

  3. Part V – Dr. Sasaki’s Story Big Question: How is Dr. Sasaki affected mentally and emotionally by the bomb? • How and why is Dr. Sasaki successful? Describe the business ventures he undertakes as a result. • Describe Dr. Sasaki’s near-death experience. What is ironic about his behavior afterwards? • What is the third trying event in his life? • What opportunities does he take advantage of later in life? Describe his odd characteristics and draw a conclusion as to what they show about his character. • Describe the final scene in which we see Dr. Sasaki. What is he most disturbed about after all these decades?

  4. Summative Essay Practice DUMMY PROMPT: Select two characters in Hiroshima and compare and contrast the ways in which they are affected by the bomb, both immediately and throughout their lives. Task One : Develop a thesis statement. Task Two : Break up your thesis statement into body paragraphs- Write the topic sentences for each paragraph. Task Three: List details, quoted evidence or scenes for each of your body paragraph (at least 2 per body paragraph)

  5. Summative Essay Practice - Outlines • Prepare notes on BOTH Dr. Sasaki and Mrs. Nakamura, and on their experiences throughout the novel. How they are affected by the bomb in both the short and the long-term, (think of what we discussed in class). • Find evidence that shows each of these effects. Focus in on parts III, IV and V. • You have 1 page to fill out of handwritten notes, both sides. • You have an hour and a half to write an opening paragraph, and three body paragraphs. • PROOFREAD YOUR WORK before turning it in. • Study your notes, the book, the powerpointexamples on essay writing, the comments on your homework. • You can come ask me a question after school today. I will be here for one hour.
