  4. Summary and Review • A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving explores the lives of two best friends, John and Owen, who endure the obstacles of life together. As an older man looking back on his younger years, John tells the amazing stories surrounding his friend Owen who calls himself “God’s instrument.” Through these stories relating to tragedy, fate and several historical events, John speaks of how Owen changed his life for the better. • This novel is a great read for history buffs, those interested in religion, and anyone who would enjoy reading about a character driven to accomplishing his or her life purpose. Overall, this novel is inspirational and uplifting. Although there are many “happy” aspects of this book, there are also mature/graphic details that may not be suitable for all teenagers. With death being a dominant theme, the storyline may seem quite depressing to some, but, this theme purposefully adds to the mind-blowing ending of the book.

  5. Suggestions • The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier • Male protagonist • High school scene • Conflicts with people of authority • Round protagonist

  6. This book deals a lot with religion, death, sacrifice, gravestones, and granite.
