  1. Garden City Physical Education Back to School Night 2012

  2. What is Physical Education? • Physical Education is an important component of each student’s school experience.  Physical wellness and psychomotor skills are developed through a variety of activities.  As a young adult, it is important to acquire and refine skills that will enhance quality of life through a physically active and healthy habits.

  3. Why it is not ‘Gym’ class? • Years ago, ‘Gym’ class was typified by practices such as: outdated uniforms, militant style command teaching, humiliation of the less skilled/ glorification of those athletically gifted, and focus on ‘team sports for the now’.

  4. Mission: Physical Education  The Garden City Physical Education program is based upon the acquisition of knowledgeand skills that are the foundation for engaging in physical activity. Our mission is to empower all students to sustain regular, lifelong physical activity as a foundation for a healthy, productive and fulfilling life.  The Garden City High School Physical Education curriculum is a sequential educational program. It is based on physical activities undertaken in an active, caring, supportive and nonthreatening atmosphere in which every student is challenged and successful. We aim to provide every student with a wide variety of physical activities and challenges that will contribute to the development and maintenance of their physical, cognitive, and affective well being. Ultimately students will be provided with the foundation for making informed decisions that will empower them to achieve and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

  5. ATTENDANCE • Students must be in locker room when bell rings.  Students are allotted a maximum of five minutes to change and will be marked late if he/she exceed the time limit. • Three lateness’s of any kind will count as a 5pt. deduction on the overall grade. • If a student misses half of the class or more then he/she will not receive credit for the day. • Students are allotted one legal absence per quarter (i.e. music lesson, guidance meeting, field trip, college visit or illness).  Thereafter, students are required to make up each missed class in order to receive full credit.  • A cut will result in a full loss of credit for the day and a school detention.  Class may not be made up and student will lose 10 points.

  6. PREPARATION • Students are required to dress in appropriate attire consisting of a t-shirt or sweatshirt, athletic shorts or sweats, and athletic sneakers. THERE MUST BE A CHANGE OF CLOTHES! • Attire should be in good taste with no offensive or inappropriate sayings or symbols. • Hats may not be worn during physical education class, including gymnasium and fitness center. • Any student that is unprepared will lose full credit for the day (resulting in a 10 point deduction from the final grade).  Make-ups will be offered throughout the year in order to earn 5 points of the 10 point deduction. A written assignment that must be completed during the period will be given to them by the teacher.  If the student chooses not to complete the written assignment a school detention will follow.
