The IMU Server Oxford, Dec 18, 2008
Overview • Short history of the IMU Server at ZIB • Why CMS? • Which candidates? • The Typo3 CMS • First experiences and results • Is this a solution for CEIC? W. Dalitz
History of IMU Server • In 2003 we started at ZIB with a poor version of HTML-pages for the IMU webserver www.mathunion.org • Some Commissions were also presented on this server • ICMI (International Commission of Mathematical Instructions) • CDE (Commission on Development and Exchange) • ICHM (International Commission on the History of Mathematics) • Additionally we setup the services • IMU-Net, ICMI-Net (2007) • EWDM (FWDM) W. Dalitz
Why CMS? • To be reliable (i.e. to rearrange or move webpages within the server) • To make the server more consistent (no dead links) • User access control to the content of the server • To distribute „page responsibilities“ • To host more than one server (i.e. server for the committees and commissions) W. Dalitz
Which candidates? • Joomla • Mambo • Drupal • Typo3 • … • In 2003 we decided to use Typo3 because it was more stable than the others and there is a buildin-editor, which allows non-specialists to edit webpages. • You get more functionalities with 3rd-party extensions • Today, Joomla would also be a good choice. First experiences and results • Stable IMU server • Additional services: EWDM, IMU-Net, ICMI-Net • Flexible Server via typo3-extensions W. Dalitz
Is this a solution for CEIC? • Of cource, this is a decision by this Committee • You need to have editors in charge of the content • ZIB will offer to run the technical environment and helps to setup a basic server (seperatly or within the IMU server) W. Dalitz
