  1. Unit 6 GOING WEST WARMING UP

  3. The Great Trek Westwards

  4. They traveled the road of hardship

  5. The Great Trek westwards had been turned into many different movies. (Dances with Wolves). In 1800, the United States of America was a young country that had just come into being. It consisted of the states east and south of the Great Lakes. Any of the land to the west of the Mississippi river was unexplored. In 1830, President Thomas Jefferson sent a secret message to the American congress, calling for an expedition to the Pacific Ocean.

  6. The US wanted to extend its territory over the whole of the continent. In the next sixty years, four expeditions set out to explore the land. In the two decades before the Civil War, thousands of Americans moved to the west. As many as 250,000 people traveled overland to northern California, while untold thousands migrated overland to southern California by way of the various southern routes. About 43,000 people reached Oregon, and at least a similar number settled in Utah. In search of land, they

  7. traveled the road of hardship to find a new home and carve out a new existence. No roads existed, and there were no villages on the way. The trip was dangerous and very difficult. Many people died either from hunger, thirst or exhaustion. Some groups got lost in the desert while some other froze to death in terrible snow storms in the mountains. In later years, many people who had made the journey wrote down their memoirs, although many were so happy to have reached the ne land, and so busy to build up a new existence that many did not do so until after many years.

  8. Perseverance played a very important role in the Great Trek Westwards. At last, they succeeded in reaching their destination. What do you think of “Perseverance”? What is the relationship between failure and success? What kind of person are you? Now let’s do the self-assessment on page 46.

  9. PRE-READING Discuss the following questions with your partner. • Who were the Native Americans? • Where did they live and what do • you know about their life? The Native Americans were the Indian. They lived in the vast land of West America and their life was simple and hard. They hunt for food and rode on horses.

  10. 2. History counts many cases in which settlers moved into areas that belonged to other people. Can you give some examples? What happened? The English moved into New Zealand, where they found the Maori already living. Similarly, the British moved into Australia, where they found the Aboriginals already living there. In more recent history the Jewish people moved into the country that belonged to the Palestine people. In each case there were conflicts about the land.

  11. 3. The new settlements in America soon became known as the Wild West. Why? There were no laws and there were no police, no jails and no courts. As a result, law and order did not exist, and anything could happen.
