  2. NYS REGENTS ~ • All of you will have to take the NYS Regents Examination for English during Finals week of this year. • You need to pass this examination to graduate. • You cannot get a diploma without a passing grade.

  3. So what is it? • The English Regents is a 1 day Examination (3 hours) • The Regents Exam consists of four separate “Tasks” • These tasks test your writing abilities, your ability to listen and take notes, reading comprehension and literary analysis • There is one major essay on the examination, and that is the Critical lens essay

  4. Grading . . . • This essay is graded on: • Meaning • Development • Language • Organization • Conventions

  5. Task One • The first task is testing your listening skills and your note-taking skills. • You will listen to a passage read by me two times. You will never see the passage, but need to take notes on the reading in order to answer the multiple choice. • I’ll pass out the task now, and we can read through it together.

  6. Task Two • This task consists of reading one passage and answering the multiple choice questions.

  7. Task Three • Consists of two separate literary passages . . . You are directed to find the common theme and literary techniques the passages utilize and there are two separate writing components to this task, as well as multiple choice.

  8. Task Four • Critical Lens • The Critical Lens essay is scored using this rubric (hand-out)

  9. We are going to start with the listening passage and multiple choice questions . .. Task one
