  4. HOW TO EARN CREDITS at FHS… You will take 6classes each year. You will earn 5 credits for every class you pass, each semester, 10 for that year. This means that you should have 60 credits by the end of each grade level/year.

Mathematics 3 Years Required / 4 Years Recommended Including IM1 (Algebra 1), IM2 (Geometry), and IM3 (Algebra 2) d. Laboratory Science 2 Years Required / 3 Years Recommended Chosen from Biology, Chemistry, Physics e. Language other than English 2 Years Required / 3 Years Recommended Must be the same language f. Visual & Performing Arts 1 Year Required g. College Preparatory Electives 1 Year Required Chosen from approved UC “a-g” course list Remember: The SAT or ACT plus Writing is also required for most colleges. Student Enrollment & Course Registration Information • Step 1: Online Course Registration • Your student will fill out their course selection sheet(yellow) and then enter their 1st choice courses online through PowerSchool (Click on the “Class Registration” link under “Navigation” on the left side of the screen. You will be prompted to make course choices in each subject area and submit. If you don’t see your course choice or don’t know what to select for a specific course, make a selection that is close. Counselors will be meeting with students to review final choices and counselors can make changes at that time.) • Step 2: Student Registration (InfoSnap) • Accessed through Parent Portal in PowerSchool • Step 3: Student Address Verification-must be signed • PROOF OF RESIDENCY- Only if you have moved

  10. Course Selection Requirements • Course Registration forms are DUE when you meet with your counselor. • All forms must be completed, reviewed and signed by you and a parent or guardian. Students who turn in forms without parent signatures will be enrolled in electives last and may lose priority placement. • The registration form is a request for courses. Every effort will be made to place you in your first choice classes. You will be scheduled into alternative classes if your first choices are not available.

  13. English • Students interested in taking Honors English: • must have an “A” or “B” in their current English courses for all trimesters. (It is recommended that students have “A”) • Score at grade level reading on i-ready • Multiple summer reading assignments will be required. • Honors Contract must be signed. Students must commit to the year-long course. They will be unable to switch their course once it has been selected.

  15. An ELECTIVE is any class that is not required for graduation and does not meet a graduation subject requirement.

  16. Electives • Choose electives that might have some connection to a career in which you are interested. • The purpose of taking these courses is to prepare you for your next level of education, not just to get credits so that you can get out of high school.

HUMANITIES Aka: ACADEMIC DECATHLON (ACA-DECA) If you love to learn, like teamwork, and enjoy competition, then Folsom High’s county award winning Academic Decathlon class might be the perfect you. Working as a team your class will study all aspects of a topic and then travel to the huge county competition to bring home the gold. 2018-2019 Topic:

  24. Classes that meet the Career Technical Education (CTE) and Elective Requirements

  25. Exploring Computer Science • Coursework written by Computer Science professors from UCLA and Oregon State University. • Introduction to the world of computer science. • Learn HTML and CSS to design web pages. • Introduction to programming through animation and robotics.

  26. Computer Applications Learn to increase your keyboarding speed, make great Power Point presentations , get an introduction to web design, and create Excel spreadsheets in this class. You will need these skills in college and for your career. Would you like to earn high school and college credits at the same time? That’s possible if you take Computer Applications.

  28. INTRODUCTION TO ENGINEERING DESIGN Careers in the engineering field are high paying and there are lots of job opportunities in this field. Introduction to Engineering Design is the first of four Project Lead the Way engineering classes offered at Folsom High School. This class is for students who want to solve problems in the future and create new designs for everything from cars to bridges to artificial body parts and so much more. There is also a potential to earn college credit.

  29. VIDEO PRODUCTION 1 If you take Media Production 1, you will study all aspects of the the art of film making. You will make your own videos and learn how to produce a live broadcast using the campus studio. Media Production 1 also meets the VAPA requirement for students planning to go to college.

  30. Intro. Product Innovation Design and Manufacturing Do you like building and designing things? Do you want to work with woods, metals, plastics and composites? Students will learn to design, draw and model products that they will build through the proper use of hand tools, machinery tools, 3D printers and CNC machines. Students will demonstrate a thorough understanding of industry safety standards and will receive instruction regarding related career paths. Students who successfully complete Introduction to Product Innovation and Design will have the opportunity to take a advance courses and complete a CTE pathway.

  31. YEARBOOK If you enjoy photography, writing, and graphic design and love to work with a team you would be a good addition to the yearbook staff. You are invited to join us in creating a memorable yearbook for all Bulldogs.

  32. Classes that meet Fine Arts/VAPA and Elective requirements

  33. 3 Dimensional Art (Sculpture) In 3D Art you will create art objects out of a variety of materials: clay, glass, wire, paper etc.

  34. DRAWING AND PAINTING 1 You don’t have to be a great artist to enjoy drawing and painting... …although, you may be surprised that you have more talent than you thought!

  41. If you like to act, this class is for you. In Drama 1 you will learn basic acting skills, stage presence movement, technical design, and have fun at the same time!

  42. INTRODUCTION TO TECHNICAL THEATER Do you enjoy building and construction, interior design or costuming? If so, you might enjoy working behind the scenes in the Introduction to Technical Theater Class.

SPEECH AND DEBATE 1 Speech and Debate 1 is an activity oriented class introducing students to effective speaking skills. Going beyond simple speeches, students will develop confidence with multiple forms of presentations - including Mock Trials, Interviews, Advertising and Debate.  ALL speaking abilities are welcome!

Student Request Form & Schedule Changes It is essential that all students seriously consider course selections during the registration process because there may be limited opportunities to make changes in the future. Folsom High School classes are yearlong. Schedule Change Process 1. If a parent or student believes that there is a compelling need to change a class/schedule, the student or parent should contact the counselor during the published schedule change window (before the first day of school). 2. The counselor will review the schedule change request and pass it on to administration. 3. Administration will determine final class placement. 4. Folsom High does not honor requests for specific teachers or lunches. District Policy: A student who drops a course after the first two weeks of the semester shall receive an F grade on his/her permanent record. (cf. 5125-Student Records)

  45. Schedule Distribution Students will be able to access their schedule through PowerSchool the week before school starts and/or pick up a copy of their schedule at the Dog Walk. If there is an error with your schedule, you must inform your counselor by submitting a schedule change form so the error can be corrected. All schedule changes will be completed the week before school starts. Courses will be selected for the ENTIRE SCHOOL YEAR and in most cases, schedule changes are not permitted after school starts.

  46. Course Registration Form Reminders • Course Registration Form and Online Selection must be completed before you meet for your 1:1! • Make sure you have completed the appropriate pre-requisites in for the courses you choose.

  47. Frequently Asked Questions • Can Freshmen take a zero (0) period? No, incoming Freshmen students will not be allowed to take a zero period. This is to ensure students are successful transitioning to high schooland can balance a standard 6 period day before adding a 7th period. • Can Freshmen take HS courses over Summer School? No, Freshmen students will not be allowed to take summer school HS enrichment course. This is to ensure students are successful transitioning to high school.
