Silhouettes:Man • Men in the 1800’s dressed to appear slimmer. • They wore long coattails and bold sashes to make their waists appear narrow. • Noble men would wear leather boots, and buckles, while poor men wore clogs and few accessories. • High collars and cloaks were also popular. • Top hats and canes were common accessories for the wealthy • The high class tended to always dress relatively formal

Silhouette:Woman • Women wore very full skirts, called crinoline, that were very costly due to the enormous amount of silk and taffeta required to make them. • Waist lines were relatively high (under bust) but lowered later in the century. • Corsets were worn to make a woman appear thinner. • A woman’s hair has usually braided and pulled back or decorated with ribbons for a formal occasion. • Clothes were made to be elaborate and were decorated with lace ,ribbons, and other finery

  7. Colors • Dark red was a popular color for men’s coats, because it reflected the empires military uniform. A gentlemen's boots were also modeled from the empire uniform. • Other colors were gold, dark brown and dark green.

  8. Textiles • Taffeta and silk were used under gowns to make them fuller • Men’s coats often used a coarse wool fabric • Muslin, batiste, and fine lawn were used for warmer weather. • Colder temperatures called for velvet, cotton, linen, and wool.

  10. Parallels • The empire waist is a recurring theme in clothing that was popular dung the 1800s • Formal wear such as coattails and cummerbunds can also be seen today • Ruffle and lace detailing is also making a comeback in the fashion world

  11. Events • 1812- Napoleon invades Russia • 1817- Construction on Eerie canal begins • 1834- Slavery abolished in Britain • 1838- Death of King William • 1838- Victoria becomes Queen

  12. Costumes:Eliza (Ballroom)

  13. Eliza • Eliza’s Ballroom costume is very elegant and young. Its made of silks, and has an empire waist. The gown has the colors and fabrics of the first dress, and the shape of the second dress. Eliza wears a crown and carries a fan in this scene.

  14. Costumes:Pickering Pickering is a gentleman. I picture him as always being pristinely clean and immaculately dressed. His costume would be almost exactly what is pictured but with blues instead of browns, and a dark red coat, as was popular. He would also have a top hat and cane as pictured. His pants would be either shorter or under his boots, because his boots are what people identify him by.

  15. Costumes:Higgins Higgins is also a gentleman, but he is so absorbed in his work that he doesn’t take as much care of himself. He dresses in darker colors, and his suits, though expensive, are always wrinkled and askew.

  16. CostumesEliza early Eliza is dressed in something similar to this at the start of the play. The garment would be torn up and dirty. Her hat would have brightly colored feathers in it.
