Myths and Misconceptions • All anti-virus programs are the same – it doesn’t matter what I use • I can’t lose my data just by getting a virus • Adding a second anti-virus program makes your computer safer • Apple computers are immune to viruses • You can’t get a virus if you have anti-virus installed
Myths and Misconceptions • Passwords and password security are are not worth the hassle. • It’s OK to use the same password for all of your online accounts – who can remember all those passwords! • Two factor authentication is too much work to bother with
Myths and Misconceptions • Home Internet connections don’t need a router – the Internet modem from my provider is good enough • I don’t need to put a password on my wireless connection – I don’t mind sharing
Myths and Misconceptions • Public networks at coffee shops, restaurants, etc. provide a safe environment for any online activity • Microsoft and Google call their customers to offer support for viruses and email problems when detected • I shouldn’t have to pay for music and movies – it’s available for free if you look for it!

Computer Safety 101 • Antivirus • ESET, Norton, AVG • Data Backups • Backblaze, Gillware • Passwords • Password Managers • Lifehacker – 5 top password managers • 1Password, LastPass, Dashlane, KeePass, Roboform • Routers/Secure Wireless • Password protect home network • Don’t use sites where you enter passwords or enter personal info on public wifi • Common Sense Computing • NO Torrent sites, P2P sharing, Porn • Mouse over links to see where the link REALLY goes • Email – attachments…BE Careful, Be Cautious, Be Suspicious
Computer Safety 101 • Don’t accept any calls from anyone claiming to be Microsoft, Google or other tech support company…it’s a SCAM • Beware of paid ads on Google – be sure that the domain is for the company you expect….the name directly before the .com, .net, etc. • Just because it pops up or flashes – doesn’t mean you should click on it. • The Task manager is your friend-use it to end Internet session when you run into trouble
