  1. Water Ecuador 2 Team 11 Josiah Dobson Brett Nicholson Travis Befus

  2. Outline Project Overview Preliminary Designs Design Norms Major Decisions Made Major Obstacles Travel to Ecuador Feasibility Future of Project

  3. Project Overview Working with HCJB to design a water tower and distribution system for two villages: Iniayua and Washintsa Iniayua- 25 home community -Currently has a distribution system, but requires a new tower and reservoir -Minimum tower height is 20ft -Minimum capacity of 5000L Washintsa-15 home community -Requires a tower, pump, and complete distribution system -Minimum capacity of 3000L

  4. Preliminary Design • Pumping Design • Four 80 watt solar panels in Iniayua • Modeled around a four hour peak sunlight (10.6 gpm)

  5. Preliminary Designs • Iniayua = 10,000 Liters • Washintsa = 6,000 Liters Distribution System

  6. Preliminary Designs • Tank Demand in Sync with pump Demand out of Sync with Pump Pumping system on full efficiency falls 317 gallons short of Daily Demand Solution: Water conservation

  7. Design Norms Stewardship -Use only materials local to Ecuador -Efficient use of all resources Transparency -Maintain open communication with our client, HCJB -Make sure the communities we are serving are aware of developments

  8. Preliminary Designs Tower and Reservoir Designs -Max 6ft long members -Steel and wood designs -collapsible tank

  9. Decisions Made Decided on the two communities we will be focusing on Narrowed materials down to steel or wood Using the Grundfos 2.5 SQF solar powered pump

  10. Major Obstacles Overcome Raised the majority of our funding through the Innotec grant Purchased plane tickets Preliminary Models in StaadPro

  11. Major Obstacles Still Remaining • Communication • Planning the trip -Tools/Equipment to take • Site Data • Material Data • Types of wood • Costs of Materials

  12. Travel to Ecuador Team has purchased tickets for January 21-31 Fly to Quito and travel by bus to Shell -Meet with the HCJB engineers Travel by small plane to Washintsa and Iniayua to meet with the client and collect data -topographic -soil testing -layout of the village -Analyze local materials -Analyze water usage and pump operations

  13. Feasibility Estimated costs are within budget HCJB is budgeting for the project Opportunity to travel to Ecuador allows us to gather data Preliminary designs show that requirements and constraints can be met

  14. Expected Deliverables • Prototype of Tower and System for Senior Design Night • Tower structure design and construction drawings for HCJB • Distribution system designs for Washintsa • Designs and recommendations to reduce pump failures
