  2. John Adams • Selected as the nation’s 1st vice-president and elected the 2nd president in 1796; he received great criticism for the Alien & Sedition Acts served 1 term as president

  3. Benjamin Banneker • African-American who helped survey the site for Washington D.C. and plan its design, he also published a series of almanacs in the 1790s

  4. Alexander Hamilton • Washington’s Secretary of the Treasury, came up with a plan to try and solve the nation’s economic problems in 1789, favored tariffs and a national bank, founder of the Federalist Party

  5. John Jay • The 1st Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, sent by Washington to England in 1794 to work out a treaty to resolve conflicts between Americans and British

  6. Thomas Jefferson • Washington’s Secretary of State, opposed Hamilton’s economic plans including the tariff and the bank, helped found the Democratic-Republican Party, lost the election of 1796 to Adams

  7. Henry Knox • Washington’s Secretary of War starting in 1789, today we call this department Defense instead of War

  8. James Madison • Argued that the Constitution did not give the government power to create a bank, helped Jefferson found the Democratic-Republican Party

  9. Thomas Pinckney • Sent to Spain to work out a treaty to allow Americans to use the Mississippi River and the port of New Orleans

  10. Edmund Randolph • Provided Washington with legal advice as Attorney General, today the Attorney General is the head of the Department of Justice

  11. George Washington • First President of the United States taking office in 1789, supported Hamilton’s economic changes, tried to keep the U.S. out of foreign wars, served 2 terms in office
