  1. Be Clear on Cancer: Breast Cancer in Women 70+ Key messages briefing pack 25 October, 2011

  2. Why target breast cancer in women 70+? • 1 in 3 women diagnosed with breast cancer are aged over 70 • Age is a key risk factor of breast cancer – the older you are, the higher the risk • 20% of older women with breast cancer present as an emergency • Women aged over 70 can still request breast screening – even if they are not routinely invited

  3. What is the key symptom we are focusing on? • In this older target audience, there is a risk of delay in presenting, in women with non-lump symptoms (many older women are not aware of non-lump symptoms) • We are therefore encouraging the presentation of any breast changes in this age group • This could mean alump, changes to the nipple or changes to the skin of the breast • The key symptom of ‘any breast changes’ has been agreed by the DH expert stakeholder group which consists of specialist clinicians, academics and representatives from key charities

  4. Key messages for the target audience – women aged 70+ • Older women are more at risk of breast cancer – around 1 in 3 women diagnosed are aged over 70 • If you have any changes to your breasts – a lump, changes to your nipples or the skin of the breast – you should go to your doctor as soon as possible • If found early, breast cancer is more treatable – a trip to your doctor could save your life
