Status of Minerva Masterclass • Reminder • Aim • Classification of We, W, Zee, Z, jets event • One H4l, l=e, event hidden in complete dataset • Each group of students have to analyse 20 (different) events • First ones easier than latter ones • Wrap-up: look at We/W, Zee/Z and W/Z ratio • Tool • Atlantis but using a slightly simplified configuration file • So far simulated events were used - For 2011 data events are available (besides Higgs event...) • developed jointly by RAL and Birmingham • One of the 1st LHC based Masterclasses available • 1st use in 2008 and since then improved • Since then extensively used in UK, Canada and US • To be used by various UK institutes during Masterclasses this month T. Laughlin, M. Stockton, P. Watkins, M. Wielers
Example: We event T. Laughlin, M. Stockton, P. Watkins, M. Wielers
Wrap-up • We/W, Zee/Z works out pretty well, most groups end up with number within error • W/Z ratio typically too low, students tend to migrate W into Z events T. Laughlin, M. Stockton, P. Watkins, M. Wielers
What is new • Data events now available (see next slide) • Updated entry page • http://atlas-minerva.web.cern.ch/atlas-minerva/ • Updated documentation • Introductory slides • Filled out result sheets for tutors available on demand • Small changes in Atlantis doc, example sheet • Updated Atlantis layout • Changes are small, but makes it a bit neater • If missing ET is small, it‘s no longer displayed • Muon hits are now in light blue (as in data we have more ‘fake‘ muon hits • Muons now show inner detector and muon track seperately compared to one combined track T. Laughlin, M. Stockton, P. Watkins, M. Wielers
Data events • W and Z events stripped out using official cut flow as used for published results • Event sample contains 399 events with ~55% of W/Z‘s and 45% of jets • W and Z are mixed in the right proportion • Event samples availabe for 15 or 20 groups of students • Web page • http://atlas-minerva.web.cern.ch/atlas-minerva/ We Z T. Laughlin, M. Stockton, P. Watkins, M. Wielers
Web based Minerva version • http://atlas-minerva.web.cern.ch/atlas-minerva/ • This version is stand-alone and completely web based • It contains online tutorial • 1st 5 events are for student to check that he understood the basics • Result sheet will tell him how many events he/she got right • 20 events to analyse (incl. one Higgs event) • After analysis, results checked online • Minerva configuration file comes with default Atlantis release • Compared to Masterclass the event displays used are “easy“ ones • Event displays are from data now! • This application is well suited for classroom usage or younger students (14-15 years) • Available in English and French • German and Italian being added right now • Java scripts being simplified right now • Will ease maintenance and addition of new languages T. Laughlin, M. Stockton, P. Watkins, M. Wielers
