  2. Why Public Speaking? • Allows you to express yourself. • Influence others. • Is a skill you will use throughout your life!

  3. 4-H / Tropicana Public Speaking Program • All students will write and give a speech in their classroom.

  4. 4-H / Tropicana Public Speaking Program • You communicate everyday. • When you talk, write, and listen to others.

  5. 5 P’s of Public Speaking • Plan • Prepare • Polish • Practice • Present

  7. How to Get Started? • Select a topic or a theme • Have an IDEA! What is it you would like to talk about? • Examples: hobbies, sports, famous person, vacation, friend, special event, animals, etc • Do not use last year’s speech!!! • Topics should be appropriate for school and 4-H!!!

  8. Begin Writing Your Speech • Research your topic ⃗ Search Internet ⃗ Library ⃗ Newspapers ⃗ Magazines ⃗ Books ⃗ T.V. ⃗ Interview

  9. Begin Writing Your Speech • Your speech should have three parts: → Introduction → Body → Conclusion Keep in Mind: A public speech should inform, persuade, or entertain the audience. A public speech is not a demonstration or an illustrated talk.

  10. → Introduction • Get Attention • Introduce Topic • Provide Motivation • Preview Speech

  11. → Introduction • Use a short introduction to get the audience’s attention and share your main idea. • Can use a famous quote, a question or your reason for choosing your topic.

  12. → Body • Give Descriptions about topic. • Should give three to five main points about your topic. • The points should be interesting and have a logical order.

  13. → Conclusion • Summary • Quotation • Summarize Speech • Reemphasize Main Idea • Provide Closure • And end with a final thought, something you want the audience to remember about your topic

  14. Preparing Speech • Write your speech on notebook paper and have your teacher approve it • Then write your speech out on note cards, skipping lines • Number your note cards

  15. How long should your speech be? • Between 2 – 3 minutes • Time yourself to see if your speech is the correct length

  16. Practice Speech • Recreate Setting • Practice Without Memorizing • Practice Out Loud • Watch Yourself

  17. Practice Speech • Avoid saying um and uh • Don’t talk too fast • Make eye contact with the audience • Speak up

  18. Elements of Physical Delivery or Body Language • Appearance • Posture • Facial Expression • Eye Contact • Movement • Gestures

  19. Giving Your Presentation • Podiums are optional • Do not lean on podium • Use good posture & stand still

  20. Giving Your Presentation • Don’t say “thank you” at the end of your speech • Look Sharp - Dress appropriately • Relax, smile & have fun!!!!

  23. 4-H / Tropicana Public Speaking Program 4th – 6th Grades • Classroom Level – ribbons awarded for 1st- 3rd places (1st place speaker moves to school contest) • School Level – medallions awarded for 1st- 3rd(1st place speaker moves to county contest) • County Level – plaques awarded for 1st- 3rd(1st place winners receive full 4-H camp scholarships)
