  1. SA3 Application Integration and Support Hardi Teder EENet BalticGrid-II kick-off, May 14ht 2008, Vilnius 1

  2. Outline Objectives Why SA3 was added? SA3 Description Objectives Distribution of tasks Task descriptions Deliverables Outcome Cooperation with other activities Organization of work Plans

  3. Why new activity? Using the Grid has proven to be more complex task than originally anticipated. In comparison to the BalticGrid project, this activity was added due to an identified need for more attention to user support. The primary aim of this activity is to provide high-quality support for BalticGrid user community to save time and effort for the ordinary users hence allowing them easier migration to Grid based computing.

  4. Objectives Grid-specific support for the scientists in Baltic States and Belarus Integration of scientific applications needed by users in Baltic States and Belarus to BalticGrid infrastructure. To provide BalticGrid-II users with variety of helper tools like batch job managers, GUIs, VO management software and the likes.

  5. Distribution of tasks in SA3

  6. Task 1: Support for Grid users Total effort 30PMs

  7. Task 2: Application integration Application areas and respective application codes: High Energy Physics (KBFI, VU)‏ Linguistics (KBFI, IMCS UL)‏ Bioinformatics and Biomedical Imaging (EENet)‏ Material Science and Quantum Chemistry (EENet, ITPA)‏ Framework for Engineering Modelling Tasks (VGTU, RTU, NICH BNTU)‏ Experimental and Astrophysics Thermonuclear Fusion – (KBFI, ITPA)‏ Operational Modelling of Baltic Sea Ecosystem – (UIIP NASB, VU, KBFI)‏ Total effort 38 PMs

  8. Task 3: General helper tools for users To help with the migration to Grid Tools for managing large computations User-friendly Grid interfaces VO software manager tools Tools that support parallel programming paradigms Visualization tools and tools that support interactive mode of operations Total effort 23 PMs

  9. Deliverables DSA3.1 Report on support specialists employment and training (M12) R DSA3.2 1st report on Gridification of applications (M12) R DSA3.3 Best practices in Grid-enabling applications for EGEE-like infrastructure (M15) O DSA3.4 Support portal live and operational (M18) P DSA3.5 Final report on Gridification of applications (M24) R

  10. Outcome and success measurements Outcome With the above-mentioned tasks accomplished, the BalticGrid-II will be attractive for a broad range of user groups for pooling further resources The application collaborations identified by NA3 will be Grid-enabled and integrated to BalticGrid-II Parameters used to measure success of the SA3 Support personnel trained for milestone MSA3.1: at least 2 per Baltic State and Belarus, total at least 8. Application codes integrated: P12 at least 3, at P24 at least 10

  11. Cooperation with other activities SA3 needs input from other activities NA2 Training support specialists Organizing tutorials NA3 Contacts with identified groups/applications Work together with user communities SA1 Contacts with site administrators Shared support ticketing system Shared SW repository JRA Identified or/and developed grid tools integration Shared SW repository

  12. Organization of work How we do things Will coordinate work through e-mail lists balticgrid-sa3@balticgrid.org at least bi-monthly audio conference Start with weekly EVO meetings Tasks list Ticket watchers shared with SA1 ... Wiki page for “Knowledge base”

  13. Plan for first 12 months Detailed description of work for 12 months Will be worked out during the meeting But ... Assemble support team Need contacts from every partner Improve BalticGrid support infrastructure Work out support procedures Start knowledge base Start contributing manuals and user guides Identify the applications that will be integrated to Balticgrid 3 trainings for support specialists Identify Grid Helper tools Start software repository
