  2. 1/11: Literary Devices 1 Lecture “Poetry is thoughts that breathe, and words that burn.” ~Thomas Gray “Poetry is when an emotion has found its thought and the thought has found words.” ~Robert Frost

  3. What is poetry? • An art form that came before mankind learned to read and write. It is a means of recording history, storytelling, and expressing oneself through the measured language of emotion. • We will concentrate on analyzing poetry by identifying main ideas, themes, and literary devices.

  4. Similes and Metaphors • Simile: A comparison of two objects using the words like or as. • “My love for you is like a red, red rose” • Metaphor: A comparison of two objects saying that one thing is another • “All the world is a stage” • Your eyes are stars that shine in the night.

  5. Hyperbole and Personification • Hyperbole: Extreme exaggeration • The books weigh a ton. • I could sleep for a year. • I have a million things to do. • Personification: When a non-living object(not human) has been given qualities of a person • The wind whispered through the trees. • The moon danced on the water. • “Oreo: Milk’s favorite cookie.”

  6. Alliteration • Alliteration: The repetition of a sound at the beginning of neighboring words. • “Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers…” • A fly and a flea flew up in a flue. Said the fly to the flea, “What shall we do?” “Let’s fly,” said the flea. “Let’s flee,” said the fly. So they fluttered and flew up a flaw in the flue.

  7. Onomatopoeia • The use of words whose sound makes one think of its meaning: • Buzz, Sizzle, Wham, Thump, Cuckoo, Woof, Meow, Clang, Bang, Roar. • The buzzing bee flew away. • The rustling leaves kept me awake. • The books fell on the table with a loud thump.

  8. Identify the correct device • Whenever the trees are crying aloud. • Chirp, tweet • Flickering, Flitting, Fireflies • Life is like a broken winged bird . • I have a million things to do today.

  9. Task: Practicing Poetry Terms. • Identify each literary device in the italicized part of the verse. • Cut and paste or tape the sheet in your ISN. • Do not FOLD the sheet. • If you finish early, read or work on your MLK “Blueprint” Packet.

  10. Conclusion • Complete your Poetry Task and paste it into your ISN. • Homework: create a phrase that uses alliteration. This will be bellwork tomorrow! • Quiz 9 on Friday: Unit 9 Greek and Latin Vocabulary • Blueprint packet from Tuesday is due tomorrow!
