  1. The Baptism of Jesus Christ

  2. John the Baptist taught the people about Jesus Christ. • He told them to repent of their sins and be baptised. • John baptisedthose who repented of their sins.

  3. The people asked John the Baptist how to live better lives. • He told them to share with the poor, tell the truth, and be fair to others.

  4. He said that Jesus Christ would soon come into the world. • Jesus would give them the gift of the Holy Spirit.

  5. One day when John the Baptist was baptising people in the Jordan River. • Jesus Christ came to him, asking John to baptiseHim.

  6. John knew that Jesus had always obeyed God’s commandments and did not need to repent. • John thought that Jesus did not need to be baptised.

  7. But God had commanded all people to be baptised, so Jesus told John to baptize Him. • Jesus set an example for us by obeying God’s commandment to be baptised.

  8. When Jesus came up out of the water, the Holy Spirit came and rested on Him. • God spoke from heaven, saying, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” • John the Baptist also testified that Jesus was the Son of God.

Read Matthew 3:13-17 & John: 3:5 Matthew 3:13-17 (NRSV) – The Baptism of Jesus 13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptized by him. 14 John would have prevented him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” 15 But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now; for it is proper for us in this way to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented. 16 And when Jesus had been baptized, just as he came up from the water, suddenly the heavens were opened to him and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, the Beloved,[a] with whom I am well pleased.” Footnotes: Matthew 3:17 Or my beloved Son John 3:5 (NRSV) 5 Jesus answered, “Very truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit.”
