  2. How to start a Compounding Pharmacy • Compounding pharmacies are a type of special pharmacies which are engaged in the production of compounded medication. Compounded medication is a customized medication that is used to meet the special requirement of a patient. Some compounding pharmacies provide medication based on the prescription only while others can produce in large quantities and offer it to the clinics.

Non sterile compounding pharmacies cannot deal in medications which involve high risk of infection while the sterile pharmacies can do so. Sterile pharmacies are also required to set up a separate room for the production of sterile medication.

  5. • Decide whether you want to start 503a Pharmacy or 503b pharmacy. Basically 503a compounding pharmacies can only deal in medication which is prescribed by the doctor to the patient. While 503b compounding pharmacies produce non prescribed medicines in large quantities to sell it to the clinics and medical institutions. The Legal regulations on 503b compounding pharmacies are more strict.

  6. Licensing Process • The licensing process of a compounding pharmacy is different from a standard pharmacy. The level of due diligence and record keeping regulations are completely different from the non-compounding pharmacies. Further the regulations also depend on state legislations made on this behalf.

  7. • Although the application process of compounding pharmacies is almost similar to the non- compounding pharmacies. Application process generally involves labels, DEA registration, inspection report and corporate documents. Apart from this, compounding pharmacies are required to attach some extra information with the documents like internal policies and proof of accreditation etc. Some states have special licenses for compounders like the California board of pharmacy.
