Public Education • New England colonies had the first education. • Literacy was important because of the Bible. • Massachusetts passed laws requiring public schools (boys only) • Middle and southern colonies saw public education come about at a later time.
Christianity • New England colonies (Puritan) • Middle colonies (many different groups) • Southern colonies (Anglican church) • First Great Awakening- religious movement in the colonies to bring them back to God. • Ideas of Religious freedom and separation of church and state soon followed.
Egalitarianism • All men are created equal and possess natural rights. • Consent of the governed- gov’t is responsible to its people. • Nationalism- pride in one’s nation.
Limited Equality • Suffrage- the right to vote: only white males who owned land could vote. • slavery
