  4. Primary Goal OfThe Volunteer Program • To provide individual or small group assistance, • under the direction and supervision of certified • staff, for students who nee and additional “helping hand” with learning basic skills.

  5. Secondary Goals • To help children develop a more positive attitude toward themselves, schoolwork, and classmates. • To acquaint the community with the school program in order that parents an other citizens may become a part of the school community and thus be more involved in the education of its children.

CODE OF ETHICS704 KAR 20:680 Certified Personnel in the Commonwealth: • Shall strive toward excellence, recognize the importance of pursuit of truth, democratic citizenship, and safeguard the freedom to learn and to teach; • Shall believe in the worth and dignity of each human being and in educational opportunities for all; 3. Shall strive to uphold the responsibilities of the education profession, including the following obligations to students, to parents, and to the education profession:

CODE OF ETHICS704 KAR 20:680“To Students” • Shall provide students with professional education services in a nondiscriminatory manner and in consonance with accepted best practice known to the educator. • Shall respect the constitutional rights of all students. • Shall take reasonable measures to protect the health, safety, and emotional well-being of students. • Shall not use professional relationships or authority with students for personal advantage. • Shall keep in confidence information about students which has been obtained in the course of professional service, unless disclosure serves professional purposes or is required by law.

CODE OF ETHICS CONTINUE 704 KAR 20:680 “To Students” • Shall not knowingly make false or malicious statements about students or colleagues. • Shall refrain from subjecting students to embarrassment or disparagement. • Shall not engaged in any sexually related behavior with or without consent, but shall maintain a professional approach with students. Sexually related behavior shall include such behaviors as sexual jokes; remarks, kidding or teasing; sexual innuendo; pressure for dates or sexual favors or inappropriate physical touching.

CODE OF ETHICS 704 KAR 20:680 “To Parents” • Shall make reasonable effort to communicate to parents information which should be revealed in the interests of the student. • Shall endeavor to understand community cultures and diverse home environments of students. • Shall not knowingly distort or misrepresent facts concerning educational issues. • Shall distinguish between personal views and the views of the employing educational agency. • Shall no interfere in the exercise of political and citizenship rights and responsibilities of others.

CODE OF ETHICS CONTINUE 704 KAR 20:680 “To Parents” • Shall not use institutional privileges for private gain, for the promotion of political candidates, or for partisan political activities. • Shall not accept gratuities, gifts, or favors that might impair or appear to impair professional judgment, and shall not offer any of these to obtain special advantage.

VOLUNTEER GUIDELINES • Understand that the principal is responsible for the safety and well-being of students and that participation of volunteers in the school program is under his/her supervision and approval. • Must have a criminal background check on file within the district • Background Check Procedures: 1. Complete the attached Youth Leader Request Form 2. Mail it to Administrative Office of the Courts address in packet. 3. Enclose two self-address stamped envelopes accompanied with the form. 4. VOLUNTEER GUIDELINES CONTINUED • Have good health and assurance that they are free of communicable disease. • Must receive training and/or review training materials to participate in the volunteer program. • Respect the school policies and abide by established procedures and guidelines. • Always work under the direction of a teacher or other members of the school staff. • Assist the teacher in the classroom; a volunteer should not be the sole supervisory person in the classroom. • Understand that discipline is the teacher’s responsibility, maintain order when assisting children, but refer disciplinary problems to the teacher.

VOLUNTEER GUIDELINES CONTINUED • Follow education’s Code of Ethics by understanding that discussion of confidential matters and criticism of professional staff, pupils, and /or programs is inappropriate. • Know that evaluation of a child’s learning must be done by the professional; it is not a volunteer’s responsibility to judge student competence. • Be dependable and punctual. Teachers and students count on their volunteers being on time and ready to go! • Find ways to established a high quality rapport with students by: 1. Being warm, friendly, and courteous at all times 2. Maintaining a sense of humor 3. Staying calm in emergencies 4. Displaying a positive attitude 5. Keeping the commitment to the program In summary, the ultimate decision rests with the principal, the instructional leader of the school.

  15. CONFIDENTIALITY HANDBOOK Consider the circumstances. O overcome the desire to gossip. N ever snoop or pry. F aithful. Be true and trustworthy in you obligations. I gnorance is no excuse. Always remember the golden rule. D amage can be done when a confidence is broken. E ducate yourself on the importance of confidentiality. Nuture the children, respect their privacy. T act is having the ability to avoid offending someone. I nhibit the desire to tell what you shouldn’t. A ability to keep secrets is a good thing. L ove respects the feeling of others I injustice is done when you violate another person’s rights. Think about the negative impact of gossiping. Y our ability to keep confidence will lead others to follow your example.

WHEN TALKING ISN’T GOSSIPING • When you’re creating, enhancing or maintaining your school’s academic and athletic reputation in your community. • When you support and enhance educators as honest, expert, and caring professional. • When you help to promote parental and community involvement. • When you talk about your role in improving student’s education. • When you share your pride of school’s achievements. • When you help others to understand the importance of the short term and long term goals of the school and its programs.

  17. WHAT IS CONFIDENTIALITY? • Confidentiality means protecting all personally identifiable data, information, and records collected, used, or kept by the school district about a student. Confidentiality requirements also apply to any event, conversation, or records that you might see or overhear someone discussing.

  18. What Is Personally Identifiable Data or Information? • Personal Information Includes: 1. Child or family names and address 2. Child’s social security or student number 3. Descriptions that would make it easy to identify a child. 4. Anything else that would make it easy to identify a child.

  19. What Is a School Record? • Educational or Permanent Record that district collects, uses, or keeps about a child. This includes: Grades Health Information Attendance Reports Work Papers School Photos Test Results Audio/ Video Tape Computer Disk Anything Written down or Typed

VOLUNTEERS SHOULD NOT • Take the liberty to read documents or browse through folders left in the office or on any desks or filing cabinets. • View any student records such as: student profile reports, test score results, report cards, attendance reports. • Pick-up or remove any documents or papers thrown away by students, staff or administration. • Discuss any information about a student with anyone except school officials. • Discuss any events or accidents that happens such as: fights, or other disruptions in
