messages used
Messages used
  • PETAL, PETAL-IIe messages set
  • ACM, AMC, Squawk --> No Voice Read Back
  • All other messages require Voice Read Back by pilot prior to execution
petal has demonstrated
PETAL has demonstrated
  • A potential to enhance safety
  • CPDLC in congested continental airspace works
  • CPDLC possible in all sectors
  • Procedures and requirements validated
  • Pilot and controller acceptance
  • ICAO compliant implementation
petal has demonstrated1
PETAL has demonstrated
  • A potential to increase capacity
    • by reducing frequency occupation and congestion
    • by better balance of workload in sector teams
  • Voice read-back no longer necessary for non-critical clearances

the maastricht multi stack
The Maastricht Multi-stack
  • Multi-stack configuration works
  • Accommodates FANS1/A aircraft in MAS UAC airspace to interface with the ATN SARPS compliant FDPS
  • Full transparency for the end-users
  • It takes advantage of existing FANS1/A equipped aircraft:
    • Potentially 10% flights in MAS UAC could be FANS1/A equipped. This translates to 10 000 AGDL flights/month
  • Supports IRRF work
  • Enabler to develop joint oceanic and domestic AGDL-procedures
    • develop global Domestic-Oceanic Air Ground Data Link procedures (SPOM)
  • Airlines can choose preferred protocol
  • Extension possible

Benefits Now
  • Data Link available to the users to obtain feedback on
    • Distribution of tasks amongst sector team
    • Feedback on HMI Development
    • Enabler for automated functions
  • Operational pilot project
    • Maintain momentum & gained experiences
    • Encourage more airlines to use AGDL (FANS, ATN)
    • Act as a catalyst for AGDL ground segment implementation in core area
    • Feedback on simulated & theoretical benefits
  • Support Link 2000+ Programme
    • Feedback into Standardisation bodies

Next steps (1)
  • AGDL in new ODS, development & testing
  • Reduced message set (um = 7L, 5R, 1T, 3I, dm=3L, 1R)
  • Formal procedures
  • Formal controller training
  • Finish safety case
  • Improve problem detection & recovery

Next steps (2)
  • Operational used Message set (um=1R, 1T, 3I, dm=3L, 1R)
    • Mar03 - Aug03 :
    • No VRB & very reduced message set ORVRB & reduced message set ?
  • Increase # Aircraft participation
    • ATN:03 DLH: 20 a/c, Others ?
    • FANS:Possible target = 10% Possible ? WHEN ?
  • Oct04: Late message solution: Start observation period
  • Automation, HMI evolution, additional messages , ...
  • Ground system evolution

NO VRB

Data Link Activities Started

Mar03 - ....

slide17
Way forward
  • ATN activities start again in 2003
  • We can progress already now when we make use of FANS1/A and focus on the commonality with ATN and accommodate the differences.
  • We serve our users best when we succeed to establish a uniform AG Data Link system that makes the best use of the available Air-Ground communication means
  • AG Data Link implementation can be boosted when we can provide evidence from daily operational use, to confirm the calculated and simulated benefits
