  15. Implementing a Districtwide Writing Continuum TK-8 Printing, Cursive and Typing Program

  16. Teaching Printing & Cursive Printing: TK-2 • Proper Grip • Posture • Letter Formation • Printing instruction focuses on developing the basics of letter formation in TK and Kindergarten classrooms. • Printing is a foundational skill that can influence student’s reading, writing, language use, and critical thinking. • Printing has an important role in brain development and promotes success in other academic subjects. • OVSD uses Handwriting Without Tears, which provides developmentally appropriate resources to teach letter formation. Cursive: Grades 3 • Proper Grip • Posture (including paper placement) • Letter Formation • State Standards require students to write legibly in cursive by the end of third grade. • Cursive handwriting is an essential developmental skill in that it naturally develops sensory skills in students. • Through repetition, students develop an understanding of how much force to apply to the pencil and paper, the positioning of the pencil to paper at the correct angle, and the motor planning to form each letter fluidly from left to right. • These sensory skills transfer to a multitude of everyday tasks such as using kitchen utensils with appropriate force. Cursive reinforcement continues in grades 4-8

  17. Teaching Typing Grades TK-2 Mickey’s Typing Adventure • Posture • Hand positioning/Home row • Typing skills begins with the basics of knowing how to sit at the keyboard, how to place fingers and hands, and how to strike each key. • Once these basics are in place, keystroke sequences using common letter combinations, words, and sentences are developed through the typing programs and independent practice. Grades 3-5 Typing Instructor for Kids • Reinforce posture, home row, hand positioning • Speed and accuracy • Excellent keyboarding techniques include correct body and finger positions, eyes on the copy, speed, and accuracy levels  that increase throughout the grades. Typing reinforcement continues in grades 6-8 and is also available for practice and reinforcement at home.
