  3. What are we up to this lesson? • We will consider strategies adopted to optimise operations under the following headings (as per the Study Design). • These four strategies are: • Facilities design and layout • Materials management • Management of quality • Use of technology This Lesson

  4. Learning Intentions • Students will be able to: • Explain the link between new technologies and higher productivity • Describe new forms of technology used in manufacturing organisations • Describe new forms of technology used in service organisations

  5. Technology • This lesson we are talking about ‘process technology’ – tech that allows us to get more out of the operations system without adding any more inputs. INPUTS TRANSFORMATION PROCESS OUTPUTS

  6. Technology • How could we judge the productivity of a bank branch? Think of the local NAB or ComBank.

  7. Technology • Given the productivity formula we now have for branch productivity, can you think of any technology that has improved productivity over the last few decades? • Take a moment to think quietly before writing your answer down.

  8. Technology • A bank may reduce the number of tellers it employs, yet still expect the same or greater number of customers to be served each day. They achieve this by the adoption of technology – ATMs

  9. Technology • Go to today’s wiki and access the ‘UBank’ link. Read over the webpage and answer this Q to exam standard: • Explain how UBank is using technology to improve productivity and competitiveness. • 10minutes to complete this task

  10. Technology • Re-attempt last slide’s question (following discussion of terms to include and concepts). • Once completed swap work and comment on 1 improvement and 1 thing done well.

  11. Homework • Practise SAC – see Wiki. • Download and attempt – to be handed in on Monday (give to another staff member to place on my desk). • This way I can give you feedback come Tuesday’s lesson.
