SYNOPSIS • To provide an overall picture of a star from processes occurring at the nuclear and atomic level to the macroscopic properties observable via the emergent radiation. • Review observational basis for the theory of stellar structure. • Introduce the physics of self-gravitating masses, the equations governing the internal structure of stars. • Examine physical processes important in the stellar interior, the equation of state, stellar opacity and the generation of energy by nuclear fusion. • Equations of stellar structure used to construct simple stellar models to provide insight into the fundamental theory. • Stellar evolution theory used to explore the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram, including a study of the physical conditions which occur at the birth and death of stars. • C.S.Jeffery 24 January, 2006 Stellar Structure: TCD 2006: 0.3
