  2. Isotonix • Superior Delivery … • Superior Value!

  3. What does “isotonic” mean? • Osmosis is the net movement of water across a selectively permeable membrane driven by a difference in solute concentrations on the two sides of the membrane.

  4. Isotonic, Hypertonic, Hypotonic • Isotonic: The solutions being compared have equal concentration of solutes. • Hypertonic: The solution with the higher concentration of solutes. • Hypotonic: The solution with the lower concentration of solutes.

  5. Diffusion of water across a membrane - osmosis - generates a pressure called osmotic pressure.Diffusion of water into red blood cells:

  6. Composition of Isotonix Delivery System • Active ingredients: vitamins, minerals, proanthocyanidins (OPC), flavonoids, coenzyme Q10, etc. • Base ingredients: fructose, glucose, citric acid, malic acid, calcium sulfate, maltodextrin, silica, potassium bicarbonate

  7. Composition of Isotonix Delivery System • Glucose and fructose: • Sweet-tasting simple sugars • Add significant osmotic pressure • Caloric value (~ 8 cal/capful) • Fructose: principle sugar in formula scores 20 out of 100 on glycemic index (i.e., relatively low value)

  8. Composition of Isotonix Delivery System • Citric acid and malic acid: • Adjust pH to acid range (about 3.5 – 5.0) • Adjust taste to “citrus” flavor • Minor osmotic pressure adjustment • Minor nutritive value

  9. Composition of Isotonix Delivery System • Calcium sulfate: • Desiccant (takes up moisture in powder) / free-flow agent • Minor osmotic pressure adjustment • Minor nutritive value

  10. Composition of Isotonix Delivery System • Maltodextrin: • Glucose polymer has minor caloric value • Powder — bulking agent • Prevents citric acid from reacting with potassium bicarbonate and water • Thickening and suspending agent in solution

  11. Composition of Isotonix Delivery System • Potassium bicarbonate: • Potassium and bicarbonate ions have significant osmotic pressure • Helps adjust and buffer pH • Release of CO2 stirs liquid • Silica: Food grade, amorphous (not ground up quartz crystals) • Desiccant/free-flow agent

  12. Isotonix solutions have an ideal range of PH • Between 3.5 and 4.0

  13. Isotonix solutions • Isotonix solutions with ph between 3.5 and 4.0 do not stay long in the stomach.

  14. Receptors are triggered by osmotic pressure in the stomach • SENSORY CELLS in lower stomach and osmo regulators in the duodenum send signals to trigger opening and closing of the duodenal valve for emptying gastric content into the intestine.

  15. Isotonix solutions • They move instantly into the small intestine with little dilution. • Rapid entry into the intestine facilitates rapid absorption.

  16. Isotonix solutions and absorption • Sodium bicarbonate is secreted in the intestine to adjust the ph to 7. • For some vital nutrients, e.g. Vitamin C, sodium must be present for absorption.

  17. Isotonix solutions and absorption • Easily consumed • No Digestion Required • Ionic • ready to be absorbed by blood and cells

  18. Advantages of isotonix solutions • They are absorbed rapidly, thus there will not be any stomach discomfort.

  19. Advantages of isotonix solutions • Faster absorption ensures no dilution and no loss of nutrients.

  20. Advantages of isotonix solutions • There is no need for filler, binders, capsules - all those unnatural supplementation • Many people prefer a liquid supplement rather than capsules.
