  10. Some Tips • Always use Arial Font (ETH Zurich Guidelines) • Do not use fonts smaller than 16 Font • Do not use grey, stick to black and strong colors • Keep the word count down Use a maximum of 40 words per slide • Use only one concept per slideIf you have three points to make - use three separate slides • A slide should be scannable by the audience, not readable • Press the Alt, Shift, and , or  keys to move between the different bullet levels

  11. The Rule of 3 • Good speeches are peppered with lists with three items • Friends, Romans, Countrymen • Stop, Look, and Listen • The good, the bad, and the ugly • If you want your message to be remembered, put it into a list of three • And then use no more than three themes per slide

  12. Printing the Presentation • The template contains • Presentation View (normal) • Templates for Handouts / Handzettel • Templates for Notes • Use the slides for visual impact during the speech • Use the notes section for explanation of the slides content • Print handouts or notes, never slides

  13. Example for Handout and Notes

  14. Don’t As a general rule: • Don´t use animationsFocus on content and not nifty stuff. What you say counts • Don´t use animated page transitionsThe slides are there to support you, not distract the audience • Don´t use clipartMicrosoft Webpage boasts special clipart services; Bill Gates keynote-speeches have never ever used a single one

  15. Final Remarks • PowerPoint has very useful featuresRead the help for inspiration – it can save you hours of work • PowerPoint is not a desktop-publishing toolYou don´t use a car if you want to fly • You can easily import old presentations into the new layoutRead the help
