  3. Monday: Diary of a Part Time Indian • Welcome to READ 93! In this course, we’ll be focusing on reading and analyzing college informational text. • Materials include: • Reading College Textbooks • Diary of a Part Time Indian (mostly HW) • Outliers (After DPTI – mostly HW) • Grammar handbook • College Vocabulary (Keep in classroom) • Voices & Values (Keep in classroom)

  4. Monday: Diary of a Part Time Indian • Summary of Diary of a PT Indian through Dance. • 10 mins: Journal title: Reactions so far… • What do you think of the novel so far? • What connections can you make to what’s happened in history or current events? • What has surprised you the most? Describe what happened and why you were surprised. • Which character do you connect with the most? Why? • Discuss in groups & fill out Literature Discussion handout. • Work on new reading (start on pg. 130) & vocab assignment due Monday.

  6. Tuesday: Reading College Textbooks Definitions: Environmental health: concerned with the natural and built environment that may affect human health. Toxicology: he study of the adverse effects of chemicals on living organisms.[ Journal title: Building Background Knowledge • Go to http://www.mhhe.com/cunningham12e • Click Student and then click Case Studies Library • In 15-20 mins,read & take notes on as many case studies as you can (different articles than your peers). • Students share information they learned. • Don’t forget to read an additional article for homework on a separate piece of paper (tip: search “environmental health” OR “toxicology”).

  8. Wednesday: Reading College Textbooks • Hand in Cornel Notes. Each student share a summary of at least one article. • Reading College Textbooks: • Go through SQ3R handout: Survey, Question, Read, Review and Recite • Chapter 8: Environmental Health and Toxicology • Finish SQ3R through pg. “160” We’ll mostly be doing this in class. Use your time wisely and take good notes IN CLASS, and I may let you use your notes on the quiz.

  9. Daily Writing: 12/5/13 Choose one prompt to respond to and explain with detail: • Robert Frost write a poem titled “The Road Not Taken.” Name a road you’ve always wanted to travel. Where do you hope it takes you? What might you see on the way? • Name one thing you’ve always wanted to do, but haven’t. What has prevented you from doing it? Planner • Finish SQ3R through pg. 17 by tomorrow (plus Journal title: Think About It (pg. 10) • Due Monday: DPTI ?s & vocab (Don’t Trust Your Computer – Red Versus)

  10. Thursday: Reading College Textbooks • Show me your SQ3R so far. Discuss the first few questions. • Tackle another section using SQ3R and as you read: • Underline key points (with pencil, please!) • Look up words you don’t know. • When you get to page 10, respond to the “Think About It” question in your journal. • Journal title: Think About It (pg. 10) Finish through pg. 169 (17) by tomorrow

Daily Writing: Alone 12/6/13 Choose one prompt to respond to and explain with detail: • Describe the longest amount of time you’ve ever been away from home. • What do you do to entertain yourself? Do you like being alone? Why or why not? Planner • Due Monday: DPTI ?s & vocab (Don’t Trust Your Computer – Red Versus) • Finish SQ3R through pg. 23 by Tuesday

  12. Friday: Reading College Text Books • Show me your SQ3R so far. Discuss the first few questions. • Tackle another section using SQ3R and as you read: • Underline key points (with pencil, please!) • Look up words you don’t know. Finish through pg. 175 (pg.23) by Tuesday (Don’t forget DPTI work due Monday).

  13. Hot Seat • Designated “hot seat” in front of the room. 2 minutes to ask the seated person any question in a rapid-fire succession. The hot seat member is allowed to say “pass” for any too personal questions — avoid asking anything too personal, as it can ruin the fun. Sample questions: • “What would you do if you won the lottery?” • “If you could meet and have dinner with any person who ever lived, who would it be and why? What would you ask that person?” • “What three words would you use to describe yourself?” • Questions can be funny, too, such as: • “What was your most embarrassing moment?” • “What was your proudest moment?” • “What was the silliest thing you’ve ever done?”
