  3. Alexander G. Bell His name at birth was, Alexander Bell. He was born in 1847, Scotland, And also was educated there.He was the son of Alexander Melville Bell, inventor of visible speech. In 1871, young Alexander moved to Massachusetts, and became a teacher for the deaf. He invented the telephone while he was trying to translate human voices into vibrations. Later in his career he also made other inventions, including the flying machine.

  4. Thomas Edison Name at birth was Thomas Alva Edison. Was born on 1847. Thomas held a record of having made more then 1093 great inventions. Among his best are the first practical, long lasting, electric light bulb, and the phonograph. He also made improvements on Alexander G. Bell’s telephone, movies, and typewriter. He is known for his electrical inventions. And he was famous for being a dogged worker, he often slept no more than four hours per night. He died on October 18, 1931.

  5. Henry Bessemer Born on January 19,1813, England. He developed the first processor for massive steel production inexpensively. He made gold powder from brass, and made cast iron. Bessemer Died on March 14, 1898

  6. Andrew Carnegie Born in 1835, Scotland. He started poor but, got a teen job. When he turned 25 he started a steel company of his own. He sold it for $480 MILLION dollars, and then he retired to writing. He disposed of his money by giving it away to making libraries, and giving expensive gifts. He ended up giving $350 MILLION back to people before his death in 1919.

  7. John D. Rockefeller He was one of the richest men in American history. He founded the Standard Oil Company he ran the company until the late 1890s. He donated MILLIONS to Schools and health organizations he also supported many church based institutions throughout his intire life. There is also the Rockefeller foundation that still endures today. He was also married in 1864, and out lived his wife,Laura Celestia Spelman, they had four daughters, and one son. He died in 1937.

  8. Samuel Gompers He was born in 1850, London, and was one of the first presidents of the AFL (American Federation of Labor) When he was 13, he moved to United States. Him being president was good for the expanding of the AFL. He did well in holding his position. He kept his hard work up for forty years. Samuel sadly died in 1924.

  9. Upton Sinclair Upton Sinclair was famous for his novel, “The Jungle.” It was about the meat packing company, and how nasty it was, the book helped to change the national regulations on food preparation. He also ran for governor as a democrat in 1934. He died on November 25, 1968.

  10. Theodore Roosevelt Theodore Roosevelt started out as a weak asthmatic child, who grew up to be one of the most robust and ambitious United States president ever. He was and is a hero. He did not want to become a vice president, but he did. When President McKinley died, Theodore became president. He made the Pure Food and Drug Act after readingUpton Sinclair’s “The Jungle.” In 1901 he died nobly.

  11. W.E.B. Dubois William Edward Burghard Dubois was born in 1868. He was a scholar and political activist. He helped the NAACPand attended Harvard University and was the first African American to receive a doctorate from that school. He became a professor, scientist, and writer on black culture. In 1903 he wrote, “Souls of Black Folk” In 1963, he sadly died, and his autobiography was published in 1968.

  12. Booker T. Washington Booker Taliafro Washington, born in 1865. Despite his last name, he is not related to George Washington. He was the first teacher and principal from the Tuskagee Institute. He advised Theodore Roosevelt on race elections. He died in 1915.
